Social Media Success For Musicians - A 2012 Roadmap

There have been many stories and guest posts on Hypebot recently about how to use social media to market to fans. This seems only fitting, since 2012 will see an increased scrutiny on social media marketing strategies, metrics and results. The last few years have been focused on making sense of how artists can best acquire more Twitter followers and Facebook likes. This year will be about figuring out both what to do with them, as well as, making sense of what these numbers mean.

Now I’m not going to pretend to have all the answers yet. But having run a social marketing platform for the last two years, I have gained some insight that might help frame the question as it evolves in the months ahead.

It’s About Awareness

The biggest problem artists face today is generating awareness. This is particularly true for emerging acts and even more so for DIY artists. Just see thedebate raging over how little sales artists using TuneCore or CDBaby are generating. But just creating a Facebook or Twitter account isn’t enough. The average artist on Facebook has less than 500 fans. Very few have more than 1,000. And the average conversion rate conversion rate on Facebook is around 2%, 4% for Twitter is 4%. These are estimates based on my experience, but I’m not alone. The best way to deal with these kinds of rates is to apply them to larger numbers (ie: 2% of 400,000 is a lot more than 4% of 500). And that requires generating more awareness not necessarily more likes, follows and friends. Artists need to feed the machine at one end so that the conversions on the other end have more impact.

Consider The Costs

But this does not mean grow at any cost. And let’s be clear… cost can be a major factor when considering your social awareness options. There are basically two ways to increase your virtual fanbase. One is to pay Facebook or Twitter to place ads into the profiles or streams of users they feel are most likely to respond positively to your message. But while that’s fast, it’s awfully expensive. The average social marketing cost via these platforms is about $1 for each new fan gained (see this WSJ article for more).Now consider that against the conversion rates mentioned above. Why pay $50,000 to gain 50,000 new fans when only 1,000 are likely to convert to a sale. To get the return on your investment, each of those converted would have to buy $50 worth of goods to make it even break even (more when you consider the revenue shares involved in the music business).

The second way is to engage your fan base to make recommendations for you, such as conducting campaigns that reward fans for sending all their friends a link to your website, that sort of thing. This is a perfectly valid and even useful practice, but now let’s look at engagement rates. Liking an artist on Facebook is a pretty low-impact action. It requires very little time, effort or even thought. Getting those followers to do anything is hard. Look at the engagement rates of the top brands on Facebook. It’s all 1% or less. So while this method is much cheaper than buying ads, it’s far slower.

Social Media Is A Place For Conversation, Not For Commerce

The other day I had to buy a mattress. But I never went to Facebook or Twitter to conduct research or get recommendations or to make a sale. I went to Google. People go to Google because they’re searching for products that they likely want to purchase. They go there for information about products once they’ve decided they want to buy something. Some 70% of people searching for information about products on Google are in a buying mindset. People on Facebook are not. This is why sales figures are not the best metric to base the success of social media campaign. Consider Coke. Its Facebook strategy is to gain eyeballs, not sales. Their marketing executives get their bonuses not on sales data, but on purchaser intent metrics. It’s about brand recall, and that’s what artists, managers and labels should keep in mind as they consider their social strategy.

We live in an attention economy now. I can sign up for any one of several music subscription services and for a monthly fee stream any song I want. And as that model grows, the question is going to be “what do I want to listen to when I can listen to anything?” Artists will be paid for how many times their songs are streamed, not for one-off album sales. When that time comes, even superstar artists will need smart social marketing strategies to survive.

Let Radiohead Be Your Guide

Artists are an iconoclastic bunch. They tend to see the world in a unique manner, and often feel that their idiosyncratic world-view is sacred. This can lead to great art. We need artists to help us see things we otherwise wouldn’t. The downside of this point of view is that as artists adhere to a rigid perspective of self-reliance, they often exclude any other voices. In short, it’s the artist’s way or the highway.

While artists will (to a degree) look to other musicians whom they admire for musical inspiration, they too infrequently look to others when it comes to plotting their career trajectory.

This is a mistake. We all need Sherpas, guides. It doesn’t mean that we can, or should, try to follow exactly the path of those who came before us, but it does mean that when a learning curve that’s been flattened by the boots of those who came before you presents itself, you should avail yourself of it.

The problem, of course, is that there’s so much noise. The group think/conventional wisdom can be overwhelming when you’re trying to discern fact from fiction and anecdotes from something more empirical. Trying to determine to whom you should look to/listen to for guidance is challenging when everyone appears to be an expert.

To help filter some of the noise, I suggest the following:

As I discussed in my most recent article, you must work diligently to understand, establish, and make visible your core values. This includes everything from understanding what you feel your musical (if not life) purpose is, how you will articulate this, and how you will use this understanding to sustain yourself during the inevitable tough times. Significantly, understanding your core values allows you to target potential fans/evangelists (or, a new term that I like a lot, “igniters”) whose values align with yours. These igniters are the ones who will immediately respond to what you do, and, importantly, share your work with their friends. This is really the very best form of marketing: it works, it doesn’t cost money, and it can lead to building a sustained career that is far less affected by trends and market vagaries than careers built on things other than value alignment.

Understanding your core values creates a filtering process that will not only eliminate noise with respect to the potential fans you should be targeting, but also help in terms of where to look for guidance from artists who are a step or so beyond your current situation.

A few important details. First, while it’s likely that those artists you look to as examples for a career trajectory will align with your musical sensibility, it’s not crucial that they do. For instance, while I’ve never been a big jam band fan musically, I have for ages admired their values, and the way they go about developing sustainable careers. I feel that many artists — irrespective of whether or not they like “jam band” music — could learn a ton from the way these artists operate (their commitment to performing live; the ways in which they collaborate with other artists in the genre; the ways in which they nurture “community” with their fans). Similarly, many non-hip-hop artists could take a lesson from some of the marketing innovations that occur in this genre; I think, specifically, of the mix tape efforts, and the way in which more established hip-hop artists often introduce emerging artists via guest spots on their records.

Equally important to making certain that the artists you look to share your core values (even if they don’t share your musical tastes), is that you must look to artists who are in close relative proximity to you with respect to your career arc. While it may be somewhat helpful for an artist who is just starting out to look at a superstar in order to study a career trajectory, it is far more instructive to look to artists who are a step or two ahead of where you are. If, for instance, you are an artist who has developed a decent fan base in your home town, but hasn’t yet performed outside of this home town, don’t look to the band who tours 300 dates a year for guidance, but rather look to the band that is getting out of town two or three times a month. How are they doing it? What strategies are working for them that you can adopt to suit your needs?

Of course, this doesn’t only apply to playing live, but also to all efforts of brand building. What, for instance, are artists who share your values and who are a step or two ahead of you doing in terms of social media?

I would add that while you can do this from afar, voyeuristically studying an artist, I would strongly encourage you to reach out and talk to other artists. As I said in my intro, artists sometimes are reluctant to share their “secret sauce,” but not always, and maybe not even as much as we think — maybe we just haven’t been asking enough.

We desperately need more knowledge-share amongst those who are in the trenches doing this thing we love every day (hence, the TuneCore blog), and any opportunity to engage in conversations with people with shared values should be embraced. Doing so will not only help you with your career strategy, but also with maintaining the necessary empathy required to succeed today.

So, go find that Sherpa!

Music Piracy: A music industry insider talks illegal downloads, new laws, and 10 billion iTunes downloads

Whichever side of the fence you’re on in regard to the issues of music piracy, as artists creating music for public consumption, it’s a topic of special concern. Here, Alex Jacob of the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry (IFPI) talks about the music industry, illegal downloads, and some of the causes the IFPI champions. The IFPI is Europe’s equivalent to the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), the group that represents the interests of the major (and other) labels, distributors, and producers in the music industry in the U.S.

Tell me about IFPI.
IFPI is the international trade body for the record labels, both the four internationals and also many hundreds of independent labels throughout the world. We exist to try and persuade governments and policy makers of the importance of strengthening intellectual property laws in the Digital Age so that our members can continue to invest in artists and produce great new music. We also work to extend the rights of our members in areas of Public Performance Rights. For example, you might know that the U.S. is one of the few countries that doesn’t have broadcast rights for producers or artists. So that means unlike in the UK or in France, every time a radio station in the U.S. plays a track, it pays the songwriter, but it doesn’t pay the producer or artist. When you have a $20 billion corporate radio industry, that’s potentially a lot of money that the music industry is losing out on in comparison to other countries. It also means that when American artists are played on radio stations overseas, that money doesn’t float back to them because there is no reciprocal arrangement for when overseas artists are played in the U.S. Those are the kinds of campaigns we work on.

That sounds like SoundExchange if it covered the non-digital broadcasts.
That’s absolutely right. And then you have sister organizations of SoundExchange such as Phonographic Performance, Ltd. (PPL) in the UK that collects income from radio stations and TV stations that use recorded music. These music licensing companies work very closely with IFPI and our performance rights committees to try and ensure that the best practice is copied around the world and that the rights of producers and artists are extended around the world so that everyone enjoys a level playing field.

Would you say the primary function of the IFPI, at this point, is to protect digital copyright? Is that where a lot of your efforts are focused?
Yes. IFPI has been around for a long time. It was founded back in 1933, and has always fulfilled a range of functions. But piracy has always been right up there on IFPI’s agenda. And piracy has a physical world too – the CD world. At one point, roughly one in three CDs sold worldwide was a counterfeit and had no money going back to the artists and record producers, so it was obviously a major issue. In the digital world, we estimate that 95% of music downloads online are unlicensed and illegal, with no money going back to the producers and artists. There’s a quantum leap in the level of piracy from the physical/CD world into the digital world. When you’re laboring under that burden of an industry, it has to be one of your major priorities.

Do you think there is any going back at this point? Do you ever foresee a time where Pandora’s Box will close?
I think we’re very keen to embrace the legitimate use of technology. Our members have licensed more than 30 million tracks through over 470 legal services worldwide. So, there’s no objection to making music available to consumers and music fans online. The problem is obviously the illegal downloading and streaming – the piracy problem. And as I said, 95% of music downloads are unlicensed and illegal. That’s one hell of a figure. We do think that we can improve on that. We’re starting to see countries worldwide introduce legislation to tackle the problem – in France, South Korea, New Zealand, the UK. Governments are starting to put laws on the books that actually require some cooperation from internet service providers (ISPs), who are effectively the gatekeepers of the internet. In tackling online piracy – not just of music, but also of books, films, software, games – President Sarkozy has convened this huge conference in Paris in which he’s brought together the content industries and the tech industries to talk about how we can create what he calls a “civilized internet” – an internet where privacy laws are respected, that can’t be abused for criminal use and one where intellectual copyright is respected and creators can actually get some remuneration for their work. And that doesn’t just mean in the music industry or with iTunes or other services. There are many different business models out there. There are streaming services that are free for people to use and enjoy, such as Spotify, and YouTube is of course extremely popular as a free-to-use video streaming service. Alongside that there are subscription services and download stores.

But it’s that help from government that we feel can help us move the needle in terms of piracy. We’re doing our bit in terms of licensing all these range of services. And now governments and ISPs need to do their bit to establish the rule of law online and stop it from being, as Prime Minister John Key of New Zealand said, a “wild west.”

Where do the negotiations in the U.S. and the UK – which are two of the biggest music markets on the planet – stand?
In the UK, the Digital Economy Act was passed last year. It still has to be fully implemented. There was a judicial review of the Act brought by two ISPs that was rejected, although they are now considering whether or not to appeal that. But under the terms of the new Digital Economy Act, ISPs have to send notices to individual users that are uploading copyright-infringing files and say, “We know what you’re doing, please stop and start using the legal services that are out there.” And if a system of notifications alone doesn’t work in the UK, then ISPs will be mandated to bring in sanctions.

What about in the U.S.? Have you made any headway with government stepping in and protecting these rights?
We certainly have a lot of political support from people like New York Governor Cuomo, Vice President Biden and from other politicians. I know the film industry as well as the music industry has been trying to reach out to ISPs. There is no response at the moment, but we’re hoping the U.S. will look and see what’s happening in other countries like France and the UK and see the success story from those countries that may move things forward.

What about the ratio of purchase to piracy? Has piracy planed at this 95-percent rate?
The ratio of pirated music to legally-purchased music has been pretty constant. But what we’re seeing is that as broadband networks roll out across the world, both the legal and illegal consumption of music increases in tandem with that rollout. So, the 95-percent rate has remained constant, but that percentage reflects both rising piracy and also rising legal sales. iTunes for example, earlier this year marked its 10-billionth music file sold. Legal services are popular, but at the moment they are still dwarfed by piracy. We very much hope that all the work we’re doing to try to get a modernized set of copyright laws along the lines you see in countries like France and South Korea will help shift the needle on the 95 percent. The first graduated response systems have only started running in the last few months, so it’s still very early days. But we have to be optimistic that both the new services that are coming on stream and these kinds of actions that are backed by government will have an effect.

Is there anything copyright /content holders can do that lessens the amount of piracy?
Absolutely there is. We run an internet anti-piracy team here, and our international groups do as well. If record labels register their content with us, then we can put out content protection guys to work to try to curb the amount of illegal distribution of their work online. Last year for example, the internet anti-piracy group here in London secured the take-down of seven million infringing links worldwide. They can also help record labels talk through their whole protection procedure, ensuring that they have the best systems in place to minimize the damage from leaks. It’s very difficult to avoid all leaks, particularly once the CD has been shipped out from the factory to the stores ahead of sale. But they can help you reduce the leaks during the period before the official release. And the average leak a couple years ago used to be several weeks before an album was released; now it tends to be just several days. That is at least mitigating some of the impact. And of course subsequent to the leak are take-down notices put out against the blogs and forums that are posting links to the illegal content. That kind of action can really make a difference and can make all the difference to an artist’s initial chart position that, as you know is so important when they’re trying to market the album further and get on. The difference between getting into the Top 20 and not getting there is huge.

So, it certainly is worth any record label, small though they may be, talking to their IFPI-affiliated national group and registering their content so we can help them.

So, quite literally, someone would go to the IFPI directly – or the RIAA in this country – and just register. Does the size of the label matter? Do you have to have a certain number of copyrights?
No. The actual official IFPI statute talks about making sound recordings available in “reasonable numbers.” We have many small independent members that have a fairly limited repertoire. But our internet anti-piracy guys are out there working on the big Taylor Swift releases and also classical indie labels like Hyperion on their piano concerto series. There’s a full range of work they undertake. Definitely the advice I’d give to any record label is to go speak to your local industry association and register your repertoire.

Most of our readers are DIY musicians. So, if you’re a single artist that started a record label to release your own album, and then you went to any of the direct distributors – ReverbNation, TuneCore, CD Baby – would you be eligible for the types of services IFPI and its affiliate organizations offer?
Off the top of my head, I think you would be. If you’re making sound recordings available, even through a partner, and at a reasonable level trying to commercially sell them, you’re certainly someone we’d be interested in talking to. The systems are here and set up and working. We recently had a conference organized by the Association of Independent Music (AIM) – which is the indie body in the UK – to try to set up small indies. And they are often artists that are self-releasing and forming their own label.

OKLAHOMA CITY – Just as Cody Canada finished singing Gregory Jacobs’s hard luck Dust Bowl ballad “A Little Rain Will Do,” the skies over Oklahoma City lit up with lightning and the rain fell in buckets. If that isn’t an Oklahoma sort of scene, I don’t know what is. Kind of reminds me of the time Canada’s previous band, Cross Canadian Ragweed, was playing out in dust-blown Foss, Okla. and the wind was blowing around that grit and dirt. Just as Canada and the boys took the stage, Canada said: “You taste that grit in your mouth? That’s red dirt. Well, here’s what it sounds like …” It was very cool and strangely serendipitous, like a lot of shows involving Yukon’s Cody Canada.

But that was a few years back. Ragweed has broken up – amicably, of course – and Canada, along with affable bassist Jeremy Plato, are charting new waters and having new adventures with their band The Departed.

And on this night, at the good ol’ Wormy Dog, Cody Canada and The Departed were in town, holding an album release party for their brand new disc – This Is Indian Land – a tribute to the Sooner State and their talented songwriters.

I know a lot of people were bummed to hear Ragweed was calling it quits. But then again I think a lot of people sensed it was coming. Reviewing Ragweed’s 2009 album Happiness and All the Other Things here at Red Dirt Report, we were somewhat underwhelmed by the album, particularly in light of the far superior Mission California, which came out two years before.

The magic wasn’t gone but something was missing. I suspect the band saw an opportunity to gracefully call it a day. Canada, of course, has that singer-songwriter itch and would press on. With the trustworthy Plato on board, a singer in his own right, and some new guys, including Texas roots-rocker Seth James. It was last summer, while reviewing James’s ’09 release, That Kind of Man, that we noted that Canada and James were doing some acoustic gigs that summer. I suspect that led to the formation of what ultimately became The Departed.

And with Seth James, a Wichita Falls, Texas native, we were thoroughly impressed with his sounds that embraces a combination of blues, rock, country and folk. It’s definitely a Texas/Red Dirt-friendly sound and at last night’s Wormy Dog show, James’s stage presence and bluesy guitar licks really sweetened things up. His vocal and guitar stylings on the Littleton original “Any Other Way,” was dynamic. The same could be said of his soulful rendition of a song called “Better Get Right.”

And we shouldn’t forget the “new” guys – talented keyboard player Steve Littleton, formerly of Austin’s Live Oak Decline, and solid drummer Dave Bowen, a big fella inspired at a young age by “Animal” of The Muppets’ “Electric Mayhem” and a pair of drumsticks left at his house by Carmine Appice of Vanilla Fudge. That’s a majorly cool early-life influence for a drummer-to-be.

Both musicians round out The Departed in a seriously professional way. Watching Tulsa native Littleton in his “I *heart* Tulsa” T-shirt and a smile on his face, it was clear that he was having a ball.

And Canada, looking like Al Pacino in Serpico, was sporting a “This Machine Kills Fascists” Woody Guthrie T-shirt. He bragged about the previous night’s gig at Cain’s and how they “drank everything wet and smoked everything dry.”

And while the crowd was relatively small this Thursday night, the numbers grew over the course of the evening. A Wormy Dog staffer said while the turnout was smaller than say for a Cross Canadian Ragweed show, “there’s a lot of other things going on” in Bricktown, apparently.

Their loss. The Departed were really on this particular night. And we would get a heapin’ helpin’ of Red Dirt classics – Oklahoma-centric songs from This Is Indian Land, a record that proves to be one of the best albums of 2011.

Launching into the funky “True Love Never Dies,” with the 70’s keyboard sounds was a treat while Plato ably handled the vocals on Mike Shannon’s “Long Way to Nowhere,” a song that embraces more of a “country” sound when compared with the rockier or folkier material presented.

Not to be confused with Better Than Ezra’s “Rosealia,” “The Ballad of Rosalie” is actually a cover of Red Dirt artist Randy Pease’s song from his 1998 debut Call Me Ishmael. Tonight, the crowd responded positively to what Canada called “an old song.”

Canada and The Departed boys have a soft spot for the work of Bristow native Tom Skinner, recording and performing the pop-edged “Skyline Radio” (which a guy next to me said he didn’t like) and Leon Russell’s “Home Sweet Oklahoma.” A lot of the songs here appeared on Skinner’s Farmboy album. And regarding the crowd, just as “Skyline Radio” was beginning to smoke, Canada looked out and asked “Y’all alive?” Not surprising. The crowd was, well, polite, when the new songs were played. But when ol’ Randy Ragsdale, Canada and Plato’s former partner in “time” took over Bowen’s drum stool and kicked off the 2005 CCR track “Dimebag,” the crowd got excited and loud.

The Bob Childers song “Starin’ Down the Sun” featured dueling electric guitars between Canada and James and the results were inspiring to this guitar junkie.

Interestingly, the best and most fascinating song of the set was “Face on Mars,” a song with a decidedly spooky vibe and a Randy Crouch original. Littleton’s prog-rock synth textures certainly added to the song’s otherworldly atmosphere, as did the voice-distorting mic Canada sang into.

Hearing these songs reminds you that Oklahoma has some incredibly talented folks. The songwriters whose songs were featured tonight in the Departed’s set certainly showcased that fact.

Jun 14th, 2011: So frikkin happy to finally be able to make this one public!

This was such an incredible video to make and be a part of and I'm not sure I can even express all the reasons why in a short description.

Rex first contacted me some months back, he said had been on my site the night before and watched my entire feature "For Love & Stacie" and checked out some of my music vids but that mainly because of FL&S really wanted me to do one for "Whiskey Wrote This Song". For some reason that I'm not quite sure of I was really kinda tickled that a musician was referring to "For Love & Stacie" as to why they wanted me to do their music video. He sent over the song and from first listen I loved the track. Based on the title I alone I initially thought it was going to be some sort of happy country sing-a-long drinkin song, not that there's anything wrong with those but I was more than pleasantly surprised to find something much deeper, much darker, and so much more passionate than what I had expected.

The storyline and visual aspects of this one became pretty clear pretty fast. I knew the kind of environment I wanted for both the band and the home but not a particular location. I also knew that I wanted the entire storyline filmed in slow motion. I became intrigued with the idea of telling an entire story with what amounts to be not a whole lot of time. Initially I had hoped to use a Phantom or Weisscam for the storyline but when I couldn't dig one up for the dates we wanted I opted for a RED with its ability to shoot 120 fps, not as extreme as I had wanted but workable. All told the storyline takes up about 130 seconds of the video, filmed at 120 fp that means that the storyline in real-time only amounts to about 32 seconds.

Stacy Zeiler Kenyon immediately came to mind for the lead female, in part but obviously not completely due to a handful of pictures she had posted wearing the same dress I later had her wear during the first half of the vid. Something about her in that dress was just a perfect match and though she hadn't acted before based on her modeling I knew she could visually convey the emotions needed for the part and I wasn't disappointed, she was amazing, incredible to work with and nailed it on every take. Not to mention that even after getting slammed against a kitchen counter ten or more times to the point of physical bruising she never once complained! (Sorry bout that Stacy!) By the way some of you who know my work may recognize her from the "Threads Of Hope Charity Fashion Show" video I did for her swimwear line. http://www.vimeo.com/11394371

The male lead was not so easy. I had a look that I wanted and no one that had submitted a headshot or came over for casting was really fitting the bill, we had some that were pretty close but none that were dead on. Three days before the shoot I still wasn't 100% sold on the guy that we had cast and decided to meet with just one more, I had seen his headshot and he had some great credits so I figured may as well. Around 9pm three days before the shoot in walked Craig Nigh, dressed the part and a little on the scruffy side, he was it. Looking at the video now I know we couldn't have gotten anyone better and thrilled that he came along.

For locations one afternoon Ruben (my producer on this) and I were out and about scouting for a location for the house and randomly drove by an old dilapidated greenhouse. The fans in the walls were perfect as the backdrop and after seeing it couldn't even think of shooting anywhere else. It took Ruben some doing but somehow through those magical producer skills of his he finally managed to track down the owner of the property. We went to meet with him and give it a better look a couple weeks later and it was everything I wanted. Funny side note, as you can see in the time-lapse (http://www.vimeo.com/10808793) we all got there while the sun was still out and the place looks, well, funky at best. Even though the first time I saw it I knew what we were going to do with light shooting through the fans, the smoke, the, dare I say "ambiance"? Rex and the band didn't. Rex later confessed that when they first pulled up and first saw the place his band was like "What the hell did you get us into?". Apparently once the sun went down, the lights came on and they saw some playback they were more than cool with it. Another side note is that as it was unused and pretty run down there was no electricity, the fans were inoperable and we had to have a PA ducked down outside behind each of them manually spinning the fans while we filmed.

With the RED we were lucky to bring DP Michael Morlan on board. Now I'm one of those that likes to do everything himself, I generally hate being behind a monitor directing while someone else is wielding the camera and, if I'm to be honest, originally we hired Michael more for his gear than anything else. Now that wasn't based on his work, just on how I usually liked to do things and I had every intention of DP'ing and shooting 99% of it with his RED. We shot the band before shooting the story and after the first take I loved what I was seeing and let him do the second, and third, and fourth etc etc etc. At one point I even said to him "Man, not trying to insult ya but your shots almost look like I'm shooting them" and he said one of the most cool things I've ever had a camera person say to me, he said "I watched a bunch of your stuff to try and match your style." I'll go ahead and say that it doesn't mean he liked my style of shooting! But I was totally impressed that he said that. Needless to say I only shot one or two takes myself and left the rest to him. Michael, you're awesome.

The one other obvious challenge in this was the CGI. It was the first concept for me that required it and though I knew the shot that I wanted I had no clue how to get it. Thankfully we had Technical Director Christopher Louis on location to help coordinate the shot and later to do the modeling of the bottle as well as roughing out the scene with the final animation being done by an incredible artist Jarno Cordia of AirRebels. With this the most important thing from day one was that the CGI had to blend seamlessly with the scene, not an easy task. In a lot of films/videos there is a certain CGI look that we've come to accept if not appreciate. There's that suspension of disbelief that even though something may have a somewhat computer generated look we don't mind because we're used to it. For this it had to be absolutely photorealistic. Because the narrative was reality based anything that looked phony would have snapped the viewer out of the emotion of the scene and made them focus on the effect and blown the tension of the moment and relief at the subsequent reveal. I can't thank Christopher and Jarno enough for the tremendous talent and dedication they had in helping me keep people in that moment.

Decisions

Isn’t life full of decisions.
Everyday we’re confronted with decisions.
Truth is there’s only one decision that really matters in the end.

There’s another tricky word, truth.
Most people don’t care what the truth is.
They decide their truth based off their feelings and emotions.
And yet there is only one truth.

But the truth is not my issue.
I know the truth so there’s no decision there.
What I don’t know is the impact my decisions will have on those that I care most about.
My family.
My position in Christ.
Will it be positive?... Or negative?

So I look at truth. Truth is this, I’ve made some really, really bad decisions in my life. I’ve also been affected by others bad decisions. But the worst part is the ones I love have been affected by them too.

Truth is anyone that says they have no regrets in life are one of three things.
1.you’re a liar
2.you have a seared conscience
3.you’re God

I have so many regrets.
People I’ve hurt by my bad decisions. The greatest is wasting so much time not serving Christ.
Romans 8:28 says ‘....we know that God works all things together for good.....’
Isn’t it a shame that He has to. Grace

At the end of all things Great Divide we all made bad decisions.
Mike did & said things that hurt. Not only me but the ones I love.
I certainly did things that hurt and absolutely said things that were terrible. Most of them toward Mike. Some at myself. Some at God.
Out of hurt.
And anger.
Mostly anger at myself.

Regardless, it changed my life. And the lives of ones I love. So I buried it. Deep. Way down deep.

I’ve been asked over the years what my interest level in getting back together to do a TGD show would be.
My response has always been the same. I have no interest.
I never say never. I don’t like limiting God that way.
But I always said it would take an act of God to prompt me to do it.

God acts. He is not dormant. He is actively working in our lives. Psalm 139:13-18

Here’s a truth I learned not long after Mike departed. Forgiveness is not for the person you’ve been wronged by.
It’s for you. Read 1 John 1.
Go to someone you have been wronged by and say ‘I forgive you’.
They’ll probably respond ‘So what’.
Truth is they may not even feel like they’ve wronged you.
Or they don’t care if they have.

I’ve dedicated the last 9 years of my life to rightly dividing God’s word.
His word is amazing.
Never comes back void.

One day, as I was studying over a passage, it hit me.
I realized another truth.
Every single day I do something offensive to God.
Every single day I sin.
I openly wrong God.

And yet every single day He forgives me.
He does not hold a grudge.
He does not cut off communication.
He forgives me.
That’s it. That’s what forgiveness really is.

I thought of everything that anyone has ever done to me.
I held it next to all the wrong I do to God on a daily basis.
It didn’t even come close to measuring up.
So how can I, knowing all the ways I wrong God every single day, not forgive the minuscule things others have done to me?
They pale in comparison.
And the truth is, that is love.

Here’s another truth.
Love is not a noun.
It’s a verb.
Love is what we choose to do to others.
No matter whether they choose to love us back. Read 1 John 4.

You see God loves us 100% of the time.
It’s not based on what we do or don’t do.
He still loves us completely all of the time.
Love is not a feeling.
It’s an action.

And then one day I get a message from Mike.
God is active.

I’ve already forgiven Mike.
I apologize to him and everyone else in this life that I’ve wronged.
Don’t forgive me for me.
Forgive me for you.
But I do regret hurting you.
Whoever you are.
I do regret decisions I’ve made.
They were selfish.
With self always comes waste.

Truth is I don’t care about the show.
It’s not about a show.
It’s about reconciliation.

One more truth.
The theme of the entire Bible is reconciliation.
That’s it.
Be reconciled to God through Jesus Christ.
Read 2 Corinthians 5:17-21

Christ commanded me, and you, to love one another.
It doesn’t say love others when they love you back.
It says “love your neighbor as I have loved you”.....
That’s Jesus speaking.
That kicks it up a few notches huh.

That says it all.

There aren’t two greater guys in the world than Kelley & Scotte.
We endured together when Mike left.
We made lemonade when we were dealt lemons.
It wasn’t fun.
It’s not what we wanted.
But we did what we had to do to keep our heads, and more importantly, our families heads above water.
And so it does my heart good to know they have reconciliation.
They deserve it.
Their wives and children deserve it.
So does Mike & his family.

We all grew up together in The Great Divide.
There was a time that we did love each other.
We believed in each other.
Too much.

I’m thankful we can all look back on it now as friends.
I hope the decisions we make this time will bring joy to those we love.
I hope we choose to love one another.

But this time I won’t listen to the voice in my head.
I will listen to God.
I will seek His wisdom.
Not the wisdom of other men.
I will trust God.
Not other men or myself.

Proverbs 3:5-6 Trust in the Lord with all your heart And do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him, And He will make your paths straight.

And so Mike, Kelley, Scotte and myself have decided to perform as The Great Divide this August at College Days Bash in Stillwater, OK at the Tumbleweed’s.
We have reconciled.
That’s the decision that matters.

Description "The First Annual Kenneth Nelson Memorial Children's Fair and Concert with be April 23, 2011 at The Dome in Perkins/Stillwater off of Perkins Rd. and 92nd Street. The Children's fair is for all ages and will be held from 1-4 and will include face painting, baloon animals, Pictures with the Easter Bunny, local musician pictures and meet and greet, crafts, kiddie splash pad-weather permitting, sandbox, juice, cookies, and kiddie snacks. The concert will start with acoustic acts inside(21 and up only) at 7pm. Chad Sullins and The Last Call Coalition will go onstage at 10pm. This entire event is free. As we type this email the pre-tour flurry of activity is in full swing, running around Tulsa getting the van and trailer serviced, equipment repaired, etc. Tour kicks off on Wednesday at Crosstown Station in Kansas City, MO and then makes stops in St.Louis, Cleveland, and Kalamazoo, before wrapping up with two nights opening for the Greyboy Allstars at the Double Door in Chicago.

Stillwater, OK- The Tumbleweed Ballroom, established in 1981, will reopen under new ownership and management. The Stillwater staple looks to bring a new style and attitude to the historic venue.

The Tumbleweed's new owners are veterans of the entertainment and nightlife business, having spent decades bringing live music and entertainment to Oklahoma. Both look to change the landscape of Stillwater's music scene and the Tumbleweed. The owners feel that Stillwater has been a staple of live music in the past and want to bring back the tradition of great live music in Stillwater.

"Oklahoma and Stillwater have always been rich with musical talent, obviously with Red Dirt music, but with many other genres as well. Our goal is to bring a diversity in music to Stillwater and the surrounding areas, for the college kids and communities alike," says Philip Randolph, part owner.

Calf Fry is set for April 28-30 and will feature some of the biggest names in Red Dirt country music. The headliners for the 20^th Anniversary of Calf Fry include Casey Donahew, Johnny Cooper, the Eli Young Band, Randy Rogers, Mike McClure, No Justice and Charlie Robison, as well as several up and coming acts opening the festival.

"It's been a dream of mine to do a country gospel album and we couldn't have found a better partner than Jamey" said Jimmy Carter, the last original Blind Boy still touring with the band. "This album beautifully combines two of the seminal roots of the American music tree, gospel and country music. The concept for the collaboration started with original Blind Boy Jimmy Carter's longstanding love of country music and his desire to do a traditional country-tinged gospel album. Last year, his idea started to take shape when the Blind Boys were asked to curate a series of shows at the prestigious Lincoln Center Festival. One of the sold-out nights featured country artists Ralph Stanley, Ray Benson (Asleep At The Wheel) and Allison Moorer. Soon after, they met Jamey Johnson and asked him to join them in singing the traditional song "Down By The Riverside" at the Alabama Music Hall of Fame induction ceremony. Their mutual respect and shared passion for old-time gospel music made for a powerful performance, and that magical moment led to the Blind Boys asking Jamey to produce their next CD. The band had already been planning to make a country record with their Grammy-winning production collaborator Chris Goldsmith, who had enlisted the help of veteran Nashville drummer Chad Cromwell (Neil Young, Mark Knopfler). Jamey then brought in bassist Kevin 'Swine' Grantt (Brad Paisley, Daryl Worley) and additional top-notch Music City players, including legends such as guitarist Reggie Young, to join them in the studio. A fantastic array of guest vocalists – Vince Gill, Willie Nelson, Hank Williams Jr, Lee Ann Womack and The Oak Ridge Boys – added to the recording sessions while new friendships were quickly formed and soulful sounds were crafted out of a shared love of real and authentic spiritual music.

The result is a remarkable album, which mines the profound connections between traditional country and gospel music. The amazing spirit and soul of the Blind Boys is celebrated through the songs, some time-tested like Hank Jr.'s energetic re-working of his father's "I Saw the Light," and some more recent chestnuts like Danny Flower's underground classic "I Was a Burden." Recorded live in just a few days at Ben Folds' Javelina Studio, the album has the soulful feel of an old-school country classic. Keep up with us on youtube as we will be posting videos throughout the recording of our new record. We're at a new studio, with a new producer, we've added some organ/piano to the band. This collection of songs are the best i've ever written and the band is playing better that ever. SO - if all goes to plan then we will be putting out a great record with a fresh sound to it.

Cant tell you enough how disappointed I am in the state of this "Texas/Red Dirt" music. It's turning into pop music folks - I'm not gonna drop any names but some of the biggest acts on the scene just suck......now dont get me wrong, there are still some killer bands out there but use your mellon when you buy records would you. That rock-n-roll soul is missing and we need to get it back by supporting that bands that are real. See in Nashville there are teams of guys sitting around doing their best to write songs that appeal to the most amount of people and the tailor those songs to a singer......its all a mind fuck. That same sort of thing is taking place in our scene. Bands have seen success (money) on some shitty pop song that blew up so now they try to write like that.....pop music is money and money ruins music....... but a band can make money and real music if they want to. Just turn off your fuckin radio and get some music that moves you..........it is very rare that there is any real music on the radio. If you need some names of artists to check out then drop me a line and i'll fix you up......the real treasures in music are gaurded and sacred to those of us that have found it. You dont need to look to your buddy to see if something is cool or not......close your eyes and listen and you will know.........I'm not trying to sell you my band...........I'm a fan of music and I want real music to shine through. Just think "can i listen to this song in 20 years and still feel it and get it" .........in most cases if the ansewer is no then its because its POP music, music of right now.....something to sell. OK...off the box

Licensing Your Music Ain’t Easy – Be Cool

I recently had lunch with the founder and CEO of a popular website for independent artists. It was great to catch up and hear about all the exciting things going on with the site. On the other hand it was a bit of a concern hearing about some of what he and his staff have had to put up with recently in dealing with some of the more, shall we say, frustrated and/or unstable musicians that use his services.

On the site, artists can submit their music for a nominal fee to listings for licensing and other opportunities. As you can imagine, only a relatively small percentage of the music submitted can be accepted. There are high standards for anything that’s going to be used in film and TV and chances are that most of the submissions will fall short of this standard. Also, factor in that with licensing, it’s a bit of a crap shoot. You may have a better song than the next guy, but something about the other song just works better for the scene or they happen to have a lyric that fits perfectly for what they’re looking for. There’s no way around it – a lot of artists are going to end up frustrated.

The ones who ‘get it’ realize that you have to keep pushing forward and that you have to plant 1,000 seeds to grow 10 trees. The ones who don’t ‘get it’, in my experience, are poor judges of their own material and put too much importance on each submission. They also tend to underestimate how much work and perseverance it really takes to develop themselves to the point that they can produce broadcast quality music and get it placed. They fall into the trap of thinking that other people are responsible for their success or failure. Their minds play tricks on them and they imagine scenarios where the cards are stacked against them.

I remember when I first learned ProTools and started recording from home. I spent A LOT of time working at it. Before long I started to feel like the quality of my recordings were good enough to start getting placements. I signed up with some submission services in hopes to get some good breaks. I was sure that I was only a few months away from being able to make a living at it. WRONG! I was a lot further than I thought. My ears and brain just couldn’t tell what was lacking in my recordings. It all sounded great to me.

I remember the frustration well. I think one of the most difficult things for humans to deal with is when we can’t see the correlation between our actions and our results. I literally could not tell why I wasn’t getting the results I expected. A lot of explanations went through my head, but none of them gave me any peace. Eventually I ended up with a roommate who was much better at recording music than me and thankfully wasn’t afraid to call it like he heard it. It was painful to hear the truth at times, but I finally started to hear some of the things that I needed to improve. After several months of my roommate’s feedback I started to make money with my recordings.

Until you break through and have some success it can be a lot easier to blame someone else for your frustration. It requires a lot more effort to actually get the job done. Unfortunately, some people are so sure that their success is being thwarted by some evil-minded, greedy company or person that they will act like spoiled children and absolute jerks. This strategy only causes pain for all involved.

What I’d like for more people to realize is that when you submit your music for opportunities, the people who are screening your music are people who care, just like you and I. In most cases they’re musicians too. They probably understand and empathize with your frustrations more than you realize and they don’t enjoy having to deny anyone opportunities.

Even if you don’t understand why you’re not having the success that you believe you deserve I urge you to withhold judgement and to just stay at it and get as much honest, constructive feedback as you can. When your results in the outside world match your hopes and expectations then you’ve reached the point where you truly know what it takes and can judge your own work. Until then, you don’t and you can’t. If you’re not there yet then take 100% responsibility for getting yourself there, even if you don’t know how you will. If you have faith then you’ll have the strength to stay at it long enough to figure it out. In the meantime, be cool and treat people with kindness and respect.

You'll be happy to know that plans for a new cd are underway!! The band plans on recording a brand new LIVE CD on March 5-6, 2011, at the Iron Horse Pub in Wichita Falls, TX! Saturday, March 5th is 21+ and Sunday March 6th is an All Ages Show! Be a part of the LIVE CD recording by coming to either show that weekend!

The Outlaw Escape Cruise 2011 was a success!! The 7 day cruise was a perfect way to beat the cold weather!! The band played two shows on the boat; a private show for Outlaw cruisers and another public show for everyone on the boat. Passport Travel is already making plans for next year!
