Dusk Til Dawn Blues Festival 2007 features some 35 acts playing some 65 hours of music

Rentiesville may be a small town, but it is home to a blues music institution of sorts – the Down Home Blues Club – D.C. Minner’s grandmother’s old corn-whiskey hall.

And this year, the esteemed musician will open the club’s doors to fans young and old as he hosts the 16th annual celebration of gritty Oklahoma, regional and national blues music.

The Dusk Til Dawn Blues Festival will be Friday through Sunday, at the intersection of blues, John Hope Street and D.C. Minner Avenue.

Thirty-five acts are scheduled to play over three days – that’s 50 sets with more than 65 hours of music, from festival veterans and newbies alike.

Acts to watch…

Michael Burks
“I haven’t played this event in years,” said Arkansas-based Michael Burks, “But I’m coming back for D.C. and Selby (Minner). They’re great people, like friends to me.”

The blues veteran is performing two sets on Sunday, at 9:45 p.m. and 1 a.m., according to the festival’s Web site, www. tulsaworld.com/Minner.

This will be his third time to play the event, he said.

In 2001, his album “Make It Rain” was named one of the top 200 greatest guitar recordings by GuitarOne magazine, and in 2004, Living Blues Magazine named him “Most Outstanding Musician – Guitar” in its critics poll.

He started playing guitar at the tender age of 2, and played his first gig at age 6. By the ’70s, the musician was fronting his own band, and backing blues and R&B greats such as Johnnie Taylor and O.V. Wright.

The Chicago Sun-Times has called his work “chilling and heartfelt.” His most recent CD, “I Smell Smoke,” is lit with passion and red-hot guitar.

He’s currently working on a new album, not yet titled, which he hopes to release in early 2008.

“I don’t play Oklahoma much, so I’m really looking forward to bringing something back for my fans there,” he said. “It’ll be a good, high-energy show.”

E.G. Kight
Fondly known as the “Georgia Songbird,” Kight was nominated for her third Blues Music Award in the Contemporary Female Blues Artist category this year. She has received multiple nominations in previous years for her songs and performances.

Her latest CD, “Live & Naked,” noted for its unique combination of Southern rock, jazz and gospel contemporary riffs, is getting airplay across the nation.

Look for her at 9:45 p.m. Saturday on the Outdoor Main Stage and midnight on the Indoor Club Stage with the D.C. Minner Band.

Gary Von Tersh of Sing Out magazine said “Kight’s is a voice to be reckoned with, no matter what the genre.”

Like Burks, Kight’s been playing guitar since childhood. And it shows.

And of course, D.C. and Selby Minner
Yeah, if you’re coming to D.C.’s festival, it’s smart that you see the couple who started it all.

There will be plenty of chances to catch them – 9:45 p.m. Friday on the main stage and again at midnight on the indoor stage; 9 p.m. Saturday on the main stage and again at 11 p.m. on the indoor stage; 8:30 p.m. Sunday on the main stage and again at 11 p.m. on the indoor stage.

Born in 1935, D. C. Minner has performed with artists ranging from O. V. Wright, Freddie King, Chuck Berry, Eddie Floyd to Bo Diddley and many more.

In the 1960s, he met Selby, who was working the clubs in Berkeley and San Francisco with Jim Donovan, playing and singing acoustic blues.

The couple have been together ever since, and toured relentlessly for 12 years before settling in D.C. Minner’s birthplace of Rentiesville.

Minner is a member of the Oklahoma Jazz Hall of Fame, and most blues musicians have been through Minner’s place at some point.

Photographs of blues legends line the walls, adding authenticity to his place.

Like he needs it.

He is the real deal.

Snorty Horse Saloon gets ready to be ROCKED with ole' FAT DIXIE....

We've really had some good bands through the door lately. I was extremely happy with the Soulidium/Cinder Road show. Cinder Road was impressive to say the least and have a very, very successful future in front of them. They're going to make it big time one of these days; just write it down. Mike was Soulidiums lead man. He had these really weird contact lenses that made him look like a vampire or something and had these fang lookin' things. I had to take a double take the first time I met him and wasn't sure what to think. A few jugar bombs later, Jake and I were teaching him how to blow fire. He turned out to be a great guy and loved our venue as did the rest of the band. Simon Nytes was there with the radio station. He's a crazy sombitch. Be looking for pictures on our myspace page. There were some good ones. There was one picture that was taken that had an image of an old man in the background. Another one had an image of an Indian on the drum riser. Never really thought about this place being haunted, especially not like the old bar, but these pictures will freak you out a little.

John's show was awesome on Friday. The rain obviously kept a bunch of you away from the big concert and we were packed to the gills as a result. I was just really happy with the whole weekend.

September is upon us! That means college is back and the dog days of summer will be short lived. Business is going to be picking up even more and I believe the September Snorty Horse Calendar has the most stellar lineup that has ever been booked in a single month. Let's start with this week's lineup

WED. AUG. 29th: The ERIC TESSMER BAND!

Now I know that this is Cole, Cody, and Hutch night "With the not so special drink special." The two C's and H still might show up, I just wanted to shake it up a little bit. And yes, we will still be serving cheap drinks in a cheap can. The Eric Tessmer Band is an extremely talented blues/rock band based out of Chicago. You know that bar in Chicago that all these Texas acts are playing at called JOE'sthis band is a staple there. These guys are good and Eric is really known for his guitar playing abilities. Might throw a couple of funny guys up on stage also, people seem to like this comedy stuff. $3

THUR. AUG. 30th: COWBOY TOY ROPIN'

and it's Whiskey Night! Still going to be a $5 round robin. I like to give the pot away rather then to give away a buckle. Seems like you guys would rather have the cash anyway. Please call me if your runnin' late so I can get you entered. There is no door fee.

FRI. AUG. 31st: FAT DIXIE!!!

Fat Dixie is actually a combination of two popular bands; one from Oklahoma and one from Texas. The lead singer plays some harmonica and has got a set of pipes. They played here 2 or 3 months ago and myself and my staff loved them. Very entertaining show. They kind of remind me of a tangier version of` ARANDA who damn near won Lollapalooza and will also be here in a few weeks. They do real well in eastern Oklahoma and the Joplin area, so we expect some out of towners. $5

SAT. SEPT. 1st: HAYES CARLL and FRANK SMITH!!!

This is the one you guys have been waiting for. It's been over a year since Hayes has played here. Back then I told you he was tearing it up in Texas and now he's tearing it up everywhere including some overseas tours. He recently got picked up by Lost Highway Records who represent artist such as Ryan Adams and Willy Nelson. The new record should be out next month. Hayes has participated in almost every major music festI was going to say Texasbut this guy is literally everywhere and is probably listed on every music chart available that fits his style. Acoustic shows are what got Hayes popularity, but this show will be a full band, which is killer.

Frank Smith has done great in the North East being though they are from Boston, Mass. but have recently moved to Austin. When I say popular in the North East I mean they were selling out 1500 person room venues. I'm excited because this is a true Indy/Country band. They have also done a lot of shows with Julie Anna Hatfield and we're pretty damn lucky to have them. $12 and tix are available day of the show and table reservations are limited.

Thanks,

Steve Greene
