Doolittle Melinda Doolittle dedicated her Wednesday night "American Idol" performance to her vocal coach and stylist, or as she calls them: her "Gayles," in reference to Oprah Winfrey's trusty sidekick, Gayle King. Without them, the former Tulsan said she might look like a "hot mess." With help from her Gayles, Doolittle looked ready to meet Oprah and King in her classy pantsuit as she sang "My Funny Valentine." The top three contenders: Who should go home?: What our judges said: Rochelle Chambers, a popular local R&B and blues singer, said: "Melinda Doolittle is going to be the next 'American Idol.' She was off the chain, off the chart tonight. She was so in control, and so self-assured and her voice is just awesome."

Doolittle, Lakisha Jones and Stephanie Edwards.
Alaina Alexander and Antonella Barba. Actually, how about booting all the guys? The girls have them beat.
Hank Charles, who owns the Broken Arrow studio Valcour Sound, said: "Melinda started strong singing the complicated melody of 'My Funny Valentine' and by the time she built up to the climax she owned the song. Her phrasing was amazing, and her voice was strong and true. All three judges were blown away and so was I."
What the "Idol" judges said:
Randy Jackson began: "You made the mark tonight. You are the one to beat."
Then Paula Abdul said: "That was astounding. You phrased that song so beautifully, so differently, so out of this world. I applaud you."
With the final word, Simon Cowell said: "For me, without question the best vocal we've had through the competition. . . . I think you are a breath of fresh air and it was a fantastic performance."
