A wide range of talented musical performers entertained the crowd of students that filled the Student Union Little Theater on Thursday night.

The fifth annual Cowboy Showcase featured a variety of musical performances competing for first place.

There were 11 acts from many genres like bluegrass, rock, punk and dance. Some of the bands were well known, while others had been performing together for only a short while. Stranger Things Happen has been performing together for only four weeks.

The crowd cheered as each act performed their selection.

The emcees also received cheers and laughter as they performed their skits between the musical acts.

Four awards were announced at the end of the show.

After watching all of the acts, the panel of three judges announced their decision for the first, second and third place awards.

For the fourth award, also known as the viewers’ choice award, audience members vote on their favorite act of the night.

First place was awarded to the Flatland Bluegrass Band. They received not only a basket of gifts, but also two hours of free recording time.

“It was refreshing to hear good bluegrass in Stillwater,” said Erin LeGrand, an animal science major. “They were my favorite act of the night.”

James Price & Band were awarded second place. The band performed their song “Lay Low,” which received a great response from the audience.

The native Stillwater band Simpleton received the third place award at Thursday night’s competition. The punk-rock band began their performing career at the Cowboy Showcase in 2003. They celebrated their 50th live performance as a group at this year’s show.

“It is really cool to meet everybody that performs,” said James Hall, who plays acoustic guitar and vocals for Simpleton.

“It’s a great experience and great competition.”

The viewer’s choice award was given to Heath DeAngelo Nieves. Nieves played a variety of instruments including the guitar and the trumpet.

Nieves will leave OSU after this semester to attend music school.

It is really great to see all the faces in the audience and have the chance to perform, Nieves said.

“I really enjoyed watching Heath, it is very rare to see a one-man band setup,” said Todd Stauffer, a business management senior.

The event concluded with special thanks to the students on the Student Union Activities Board who sponsor and organize the event.
