Great party all week long! Reckless and Mickey together was insane. Turned a lot of heads with the Ben Miller band also. You got to check those guys out. One of the guys played a slide guitar he made out of a gourd and a steer horn. I think a picture of it is floating around on myspace somewhere. Women were dripping from the ceiling at the Eli Young show…he’ll be back. Best Red Dirt Ranger show I’ve seen on Saturday. Those guys just seem to bring a certain vibe with them that no other band has. Maybe it has something to do with the aliens stuffed away in Randy Crouch’s fiddle case. No really…just ask him about the aliens and prepare to be entertained. The only problem was that people kept wanting to talk to Randy while he was playing, and he would just stop and start a conversation. I had to keep a staff member next to him the whole show just to keep people away from him. It was awesome!!!
I turned into a vegetable on the couch on Sunday, and now I’m ready to do it all over again!
Big week this week!!!
WED. APR. 4th: CODY WALKER and a bunch of his drinkin’ buddies!!! And I’m Woody Justice…and I want to be your mother f’n jeweler. You just had to be there last time he played. I laughed till I cried. This is the best night to come if you want to DRINK FOR CHEAP on yard beers and girly drinks. It is also the only night that door guy John gets to barter with the ladies about getting in at a reduced rate.
THUR. APR. 5th: The RYAN BALES BAND! This guy rocks, and he’s got the coolest poster in the business. It’s a masterpiece. I call it “boobs on poster”. We just got lucky in getting him on a weekday with a routing deal. Ryan Bales Band is one of those bands that just belongs at the Horse. He’s loud, rowdy, wild and the people love it. He’s also the only guy that played “Adios Days.” Last time he was here, I got my shirt cut off by somebody when he played it and my tattoo was put on display. All this and its WHISKEY NIGHT!!!
You all now Jake the fire breathing bartender. Somehow his mom got a hold of a Ryan Bales CD and really liked it and came out to one of his shows. It kind of floored me when she invited them to Sunday dinner. Here’s a bunch of tattooed motorcycle hell raisin’ freaks going to Sunday dinner with Jakes mom. Guess everybody has got a soft spot, and nobody needed a home cooked meal more then those guys.
FRI. APR. 6th: ROBERT EARL KEEN with RYAN BINGHAM!!! Here’s a big one guys. Robert Earl Keen has not only been a part of the Texas music uprising which probably started in the mid ‘80’s but may be responsible for it. He is bar none the most respected and watched Texas singer songwriter touring right now. He is a living icon and legend and we all hear his songs played by all types of bands from Ragweed to the garage band down the street. The first time I saw him was at the Blue Note in Columbia a few years ago with Split Lip Rayfield. It was great and I was instantly hooked. I’ve since watched him play in O.K. City, Fayetteville, Kansas City, and Memphis.
Rick Brotherton has played guitar in his band since the early ‘90’s. He was also cited twice as being the best acoustic guitarist and best producer by Austin Chronicles Austin Music Awards. He did produce REK’s Farm Fresh Onions CD. His drummer, Tom Van Schaik was the original drummer for the Dixie Chicks before “The Incident”. He has also taught percussion and musical theory at Navarro College and has now been with REK for 10 years. Marty Muse has been playing steel for Robert since 2000 and has been playing in Austin with several different bands since the mid 80’s. When you add it all up, this is the most talented and experienced group that has ever walked through our doors.
RYAN BINGHAM is opening and is quickly becoming one of my favorites. Get here early to check this kid out and prepare to be amazed. He is all over all the Texas music magazines and the GO entertainment paper here in Springfield did a cool article on Ryan’s new bass player who is from the boot heal of Missouri.
This show will start a little earlier, so you might want to try and get here before 9 being as though Bingham will hit the stage at 9. Tickets are available online or you can buy them the day of the show for $20.
SAT. APR. 7th: AUSTIN ALLSUP with SARAH HUGHES! Austin was recently featured in an article in Texas Music Times. He’s grown a lot the past couple of years in the music scene and we have always loved him here at the Horse. That and here is a guy that is just high on life. He just loses control on stage and does some crazy stuff that nobody would expect. You know how sometimes I talk about bands that cater to every single person that walks through the door? Well that all started with Austin. Everyone likes to hear Austin Allsup sing. He’s got a new CD coming out and everything seems to be working out good for him. He’s got some really good originals, but he also does some old Pearl Jam song’s and some other stuff that will blow you away.
Got Sarah Hughes opening. This girl is awesome and has won about every music award there is to win in Arkansas. This is going to be a fun party night if there ever was one.
HOSTY DUO is coming to our town April 19th!!!
BLEU is back on April 21st!!!
