Ten Questions with Euclid Crash
For much of the early part of this decade Euclid Crash was one of the mainstays in the local underground music scene. The band has been broken up for six years but will be doing a reunion show at The Conservatory tonight (August 14). This interview was conducted via email with lead singer Tory Ayers-Gonzales in August 2009.
For more information on Euclid Crash visit the band on MySpace and Facebook.
Dave: What is the story behind Euclid Crash?
Tory Gonzales: Back in the year 2000, 5 Edmond kids, sitting around Denny’s pining after sounds of the Rentals and Weezer, decided to get together! When we started EC, Ryan was really into the movie Pi by Darren Aronofsky. Euclid was the name of the main characters computer mainframe, which crashed at one point in the movie. Also, we’re big fans of geometry. Currently, the lineup consists of Tory Ayers-Gonzales - vox, synth keys, Ryan Costello - guitar, Matt Owsley - guitar, Dave Klein - bass, and Marshall MacHugh - drums.
Dave: You have a reunion show coming up? What prompted the show? Is it a one-time gig?
Tory: Yup! Friday Aug 14. The Conservatory. Showtime 9pm. Forced Entree (pronounced ontray-I can’t get my iPhone to accent it) first, then The Boom Bang (garage surf rock), then us. You can purchase tix in advance through the show link at conservatoryokc.com. Dave (bassist) and Kelli Klein are adopting a 4 yr old girl with extra health needs from Russia. I wanted to find a cool way to fundraise for them, so after talking to Kelli, One Euclid Crash reunion coming up! It was at first, but getting back into practices really put the bug in all of us to keep going. For some of the old fav songs, it will be a one time reunion, but the band will regroup, write some new songs that reflect our musical changes over the last 6 years and continue.
SHOW INFO:
• Where: The Conservatory, 8911 N. Western, in Oklahoma City
• Openers: The Boom Bang & Forced EntrĂ©e
Dave: Why did the band break up?
Tory: Let’s just say… If we hadn’t broken up when we did we would have burnt out very quickly. For whatever reasons we went our separate ways 6 years ago, the break from the music and the ritual has shed new light on the areas we need/needed to change. We’ve all grown up a bit.
Dave: Did you release any CDs while together? Is so, are they still available?
Tory: One EP titled F.M.O. We still have approx 150 copies somewhere in my house that we plan to break out at the show. I’m sure we’ll get some more if all goes well.
Dave: How would you describe your music?
Tory: We go from as emo as it can get to poppy synth rock to super heavy. Or as Ryan would say, “Who knows? The guitars are too loud to hear anything.”
Dave: Who were your favorite bands to play with? Favorite venues?
Tory: The most memorable bands were Ozma, Pretty Girls Make Graves, ALL at Stockage in Ft Collins. Locally we loved to play shows with Leasing Nations, Bristol Park, Little League Hero, Mad Laugh, Smarty Pants and I’m sure there were many more… The original Green Door (now Conservatory), the Blue Note, Mke’s College Bar in Stillwater.
Dave: Since Euclid Crash, what other projects have you been involved in?
Tory: All of us have been involved in various projects. To name a few: Asleep, Audience… Dream! , Balthazar, Arrows to Atoms, On Again.
Dave: What do you think is in the future for Euclid Crash?
Tory: Honestly, I don’t think any of us are thinking that way. The thing we all agree on is that were all dedicated, ready to approach this new era of EC more professionally and we’re ready to give it our all. I guess we’ll see where that gets us!
Dave: What’s up next for you?
Tory: The fate of Euclid Crash is definitely in our own hands and we plan to do our best to take on the world. Or at least the Midwest….
Dave: Any final thoughts?
Tory: We are all unbelievably excited to be back together and so ready to rock your face off!
