The seven-band show draws a sellout crowd to Cain's Ballroom.

They recorded, they competed, they rocked, and then they won.

Theodress Avery of Metro Christian Academy was declared the winner of the third annual Satellite Battle of the Bands, a contest to showcase the best contemporary high school musicians in the state.

The Fine Points of Cascia Hall won the Bart Betow Memorial People's Choice Award, a $500 cash prize donated by the Betow family in memory of their son, a Satellite correspondent who died on Sept. 15, 2005.

The 20s, the second-place winner, won a $500 gift card from Saied Music Co. The third-place winner, also the Fine Points, won $250 worth of merchandise from Saied.

The battle drew a sellout crowd to Cain's Ballroom for a seven-band show. Last year's winner, the brother-and-sister duo the Red Alert, closed out the show.

As first-place winners, Theodress Avery will receive a prize package that includes a $1,000 gift card to Saied, the recording session and 1,000 custom CDs, among other prizes.

Other bands competing were the Dull Drums of Memorial High School and the Tulsa School of Arts and Sciences, Picnic on the Moon of Owasso High School, and 2 Weeks Ago of Jenks High School and Tulsa Community College.

Judges for the event were Tulsa World music writer Matt Elliott; singer/songwriters Mary Cogan and Rochelle Chambers; Red Alert frontman Hank Hanewinkel III; Ben Rector, a former Satellite Battle of the Bands competitor and John Lennon Songwriting Contest winner; and Caroline Spine drummer Jason Gilardi. Davit Souders emceed the event.

Major sponsors of the event included the Tulsa World, Saied Music Co., the John Lennon Songwriting Contest and Educational Tour Bus; the BrainFreeze.org and Cain's Ballroom. Other sponsors included Apple, Propellerhead, Maxell, PureVolume.com, DiscMakers, National Association of Music Merchants, Ableton and Elixir.

The event was planned and staffed by the teenagers who make up the award-winning teen section of the Tulsa World Satellite, with sponsorship from the Tulsa World Education Services Department.

Theodress Avery will spend Sunday aboard the bus, recording music for its custom CD and shooting a music video that will be entered in the national John Lennon Songwriting Contest National High School Battle of the Bands. The band's video will be posted online to compete against other national battle of the bands winners at www.jlsc.com.
