Outlaws, on The Strip, Stillwater, OK

Outlaws hits The Strip

The Strip's newest bar rocked its grand opening Saturday night.
Outlaws put on the Red Dirt for Red Cross benefit concert with several bands playing, including Red Dirt Rangers, Bo Phillips Band and Chad Sullins.
The bar was full of people and cowboy boots. Walking into the building, you feel as though you've driven one hour south and hit up Oklahoma City's Bricktown.
The new joint has a roomy dance floor, and plenty of room for two-stepping and spins. The rustic atmosphere and size of the bar counter set it apart from some of the others, and there were plenty of bartenders quickly taking drink orders.
"Even though there were a lot of people, it never felt as crowded as most bars can feel," business management junior, Nicole Snowden said. "I'm excited for Outlaws, I think it makes a nice addition to The Strip, plus it has a great dance floor,"
The bar smells new; the scent of freshly-cut wood wafted through the air. The rustic decorations are a nice touch, too.
"Outlaws is by far the nicest bar on the strip," accounting and finance junior, Joe White said.

A new club on the Strip teams up with a local emergency response organization to open its doors with a bang and a fundraiser. Outlaws, 501 S. Washington St., the newest attraction on the Strip, will open Saturday at 7 p.m. to host the second annual Red Dirt for Red Cross fundraiser.
I predict Outlaws is going to be a big hit with the college crowd, which will hopefully benefit the American Red Cross and local displaced families this weekend. Outlaws is a large, two-story club that can hold more than 800 partygoers. It is decorated with dozens of neon light fixtures advertising beer, four 150-inch flat-screen TVs and a few smaller flat-screen TVs around the bar if larger ones weren't enough. It has two bars and a large dance floor. The club, when open for regular business, will have a DJ every night and feature live bands at least once a week.
The north-central Oklahoma chapter of the American Red Cross helps local families who have experienced a disaster. It takes care of their "emergency needs by providing vouchers for groceries, clothing, and glasses," among other things, said Vicki Henington, the director of the fundraiser. It will also provide housing in a hotel for families that need it.
The chapter has already helped four families in the last two weeks who have been troubled by home fires. The Red Cross raised nearly $6,000 last year at the event and hopes to raise the same this year, if not more, Henington said. Any cash donation will get you in the event, but the first 100 people to donate $10 will receive a $5 gift card to Louie's Grill & Bar. There will also be a silent auction featuring items such as an OSU autographed football and basketball, a new iKICK by KICKER, a Twilight movie pack and much more from 7-10:30 p.m.
The event includes some of the best Red Dirt bands around as entertainment. Red Dirt is a genre of music musician Bo Phillips described as an alterative mix of rock and country that originated in Stillwater. The line up includes Bo Phillips Band, Red Dirt Rangers, Chad Sullins and the Last Call Coalition, Kevin Pickett and Southern Rain, Taylor Atkinson, Robby Vanvekoven, and Josh Boyles. Bo Phillips Band's new single "Never" has reached Top 40 on the Texas Music Chart. This will be the second year for the band to participate in the event. Lead singer and Oklahoma State University alumnus Bo Phillips said he wants to give back to the community and help others.
So, everyone over 21-years-old make your way to Outlaws, have a good time and donate a lot of money to the needy and less fortunate who live right around us. If you are unable to make the event, but would still like to make a donation you can contact Ms. Henington at 405-372-1833.

Tulsa Street Honors Oklahoma Legend Leon Russell

After months of petitioning, the City of Tulsa has designated a portion of Third Street from Peoria to Utica Avenues in honor of Oklahoma music icon, Leon Russell. The location of the road is unique in that it encompasses the Pearl District, a diverse area known for its creative arts-oriented businesses including The Church Studio, where Russell and countless friends of his recorded music.

Leon Russell Road was the result of an online Facebook campaign which inspired native Tulsan and music enthusiast Charles Roden to submit a formal proposal to the city. Residents and businesses in the community were pleased to welcome Leon Russell Road to their area. During the street's grand-opening celebration in November, David Strader, president of the Pearl District Neighborhood Association, told the crowd that Russell's music "continues to inspire people all over the world."

Johnny Williams, a Tulsa musician who has played with Russell throughout his career, noted that Russell was touched by the distinction when they spoke about it earlier this month, "He almost cried." Williams said.

Russell's decade-spanning career has hit another high note this year, as he is currently touring with Elton John in promotion of their recent, critically-acclaimed album The Union. Russell first made waves on the Billboard charts in 1972 with the release of his album,Carney, which featured hits including "Tight Rope" and "This Masquerade." In addition to his solo ventures, Russell is known for his work with artists such as Eric Clapton, The Rolling Stones, and Bob Dylan.

With this honor, Leon Russell now joins the ranks of other Tulsa musicians who have received honorary streets including The GAP Band and Bob Wills.

Bono in Tokyo in 2008:

My prayer is that we become better in looking after our planet.

And the Keen for Green group applauds:

If your (sic) looking for an environmental role model, Irish rockstar, Bono (born Paul David Hewson, May 10, 1960), of the band U2 is a good place to start.  Bono ... participated in a tree planting ceremony in Tokyo Bay, Japan, in 2008, where efforts are being taken to turn a landfill into an 88 hectare forest.  Bono has also been active in the Greenpeace community since 1993 when his entire band participated in a protest against a nuclear power plant, Sellafield, in England.  And of course, Bono is self-reported avid recycler and drives a car which runs on ethanol instead of gasoline.

Bono in Melbourne in 2010:

U2'S 360 Degrees tour, the most expensive rock spectacle ever, is here. The tour, with a daily running cost of $850,000, arrived on six 747 jets

"You compare a tour by the number of trucks they use," production manager Jake Berry said. "The Rolling Stones ran 46 trucks. We are running 55. This is the biggest."

Songs From the Science Frontier is Here! My new CD about science for learners age eight and up is now available to order, and for download

The SFSF CD is like a sequel to They Might Be Giants' Here Comes Science, with more sciencey details for a slightly older audience. It'll make a great stocking stuffer for any kid (or kid at heart) who likes dinosaurs, nature, biology, science in general, Monty Harper songs, The Sugar Free Allstars, or just plain fun music!

This week only, purchase the new CD and select another of my titles for free! This offer is available at MontyHarper.com, and is good until November 29.

You can also preview and/or purchase the songs as digital downloads right now on CDBaby.com.

Most of the songs on this CD were written over the past two years for my "Born to Do Science" program, which involves scientists talking with kids about their research. The songs celebrate those scientists and their fascinating, important work. Topics include bacterial biofilms, wheat genomics, bat evolution, luminescence dating, x-ray crystallography, wind energy and much much more!

Back in August, you may recall, I ran a Kickstarter.com campaign to raise the money to record this CD. The online science education community got behind the idea and I reached my funding goal early thanks to many generous backers!

(Are you a backer? Your CD(s) will be on the way to you very soon!)

Since then I've been working hard on this CD (and practically nothing else). Producer Chris Wiser of the Sugar Free Allstars did a fantastic job helping me capture the best recording of my career. With Chris on keyboards, Dr. Rock on drums, and Dave Spindle on bass, the songs are a great mix of Sugar Free musical functitude and scientastic Monty Harper lyrics.

I'm proud of our accomplishment and anxious for you to hear it! May it inspire many young listeners to become followers of, cheerleaders for, and practitioners of science!

- Monty Harper

P.S. - Don't forget, order by next Monday to take advantage of the free CD offer!

Something besides music... YOU can make a difference....

November 3rd, 2010
Dear Friends,

The Stillwater City Council has stated they will have to layoff Police Officers if forced to grant the recent arbitrators decision.  The councilors have refused to acknowledge the existence of available revenues as described in the decision and proven during the hearing.  The City Manager has directed the Chief of Police to layoff FOUR officers January 1st.  Due to three officers being deployed to Afghanistan and four current vacancies besides the four to be laid off this would drop us to staffing levels not seen since the early 90’s.
There have been rumors and misinformation that the layoffs are due to the Stillwater FOP asking for wage increases.  This is absolutely false.  In our offer to the City of Stillwater, that was eventually selected by the impartial arbitrator, our officers agreed to concessions.  Our officers all lost compensation in our proposed contract.  The “net” increase in cost to the city is $6,960!  This is due to merit steps that are part of the compensation plan that increases for our most junior officers as they gain experience.
The City Manager, Dan Galloway, is now claiming that the Chief of Police needs to find $216,000 in savings!  The huge discrepancy in these numbers comes largely from the City Manager not planning to fund programs and compensation they agreed to pay.
The Stillwater FOP has shown the City of Stillwater there is $173,000 in budgeted money that can’t be used by law to pay for a judgment against the city (see page 2).  Additionally, officers have agreed to take compensatory time instead of pay for overtime up to forty hours per year.  This would save the City of Stillwater an additional $109,070.
The arbitration ruling, quotes from Dan Galloway’s and Chief McNickle’s sworn testimony, and other information the citizens of Stillwater need to know can be found on our website www.foplodge102.org.   You will also find links to e-mail for the Stillwater City Leadership on our site.
Please take a few moments to send an e-mail, make a phone call, or write a letter to the City Manager, the Mayor, and the City Council members voicing your strong opposition to these unjustified cuts.
Your support is VERY IMPORTANT!!  On the following page, you will find a form letter you may send to the Stillwater leadership or you may write your own.

Thank you for your support,
Stillwater Fraternal Order of Police #102
Todd Parry, President

Please email the following message and attend the Council Meeting....     please send to

Dear City Leader,

I am voicing my support for the Stillwater Police Department.  I am NOT in support of your decisions to lay off four officers on January 1st, 2011.  During the recent arbitration hearing on September 22nd, 2010, evidence was provided showing that the City of Stillwater plans to pay out $174,000 to a former officer as part of a judgment.  You have been shown on several occasions that this would be contradictory to Oklahoma State Law (62 OS 365.5, 1979).  This money is available to meet budget.  This amount more than covers the expenses from the contract selected by the arbitrator.  Additionally, the officers have given you another mechanism to fund their budget through up to $110,000 savings through the use of compensatory time.  Bear in mind, the contract selected by the Arbitrator had a “net” cost to the City of Stillwater of $6,960.  For most officers, this is the second year they have seen a decline in their overall compensation.
The City Manager and the Chief of Police both agree the Stillwater Police Department is already understaffed.  With looming military deployments, there is already a crisis of manpower without the loss of four more officers.   Here are a few quotes from their sworn testimony on 9-22-2010.
                Dan Galloway:
“I hate to say that in front of the negotiating team, but we’d love to have a whole lot more police officers than we have because of the growth of the city.  What I’d like to have, what the city council believes we should have is probably a larger police department.”
“The economy of the country and the unemployment, when you have a society that’s restless about the economic conditions, you tend to have an increase in burglary, in theft, but also just in human attitudes.  I think that the conflict creates a much heavier demand on the police department than you do in good economic times, and so the police officers have a tremendously tough job.”
“…it just frightens me to think that we have three officers who are going to serve military duty.  I’m glad they can serve military duty but how I’m going to cover that lack of staff hours to deliver police service to the public is a huge problem, you know.”

Chief McNickle:
“…we had five people out on light duty, we had the prospect of three people being activated for duty in the Middle East, and three frozen position, and admittedly, understaffed – an already understaffed police department, and it just becomes problematic from a whole lot of perspectives.”
“The fact of the matter is, and I don’t think it’s any secret to anybody in this room,  we’ve been understaffed for quite some period of time.”

Reconsider your decision to lay off four Stillwater Police Officers.  It is not in the best interest of my family, my friends, or my community.

Respectfully,
(sign your names, please)

New CD.  Well, the album, All Fall Down is finally complete.  Under the direction of Lloyd Mainesand his golden ears ... he, the master, himself says:  "looks great and sounds great" ... Praise the Lloyd!  There are 10 new songs written about such cheery topics as death and divorce and roadkill.  It sounds like a real downer, but i promise, it's upbeat.

Radio play.   Songs from the new album will be played on Greg Johnson's brand spankin new/good old radio show on Sunday, October 31st on KOSU at 6 pm (woops:  we're late getting this email out.)   And John Wooley will be playing "Oklahoma Girl" on his great radio show, Swing on This, on KWGS on Saturday, November 6th at 6 pm.  Thanks to both!

New Website.  www.susanherndon.com  ... still under construction... but some of the new tunes are up and there's some other stuff on there and on my end, i can maintain my technological ignorance, update my schedule, and i don't even have to speak computer-language... more links and photos to add, and album info, and lyrics... but it's a work in progress... Sign the guestbook, lemme know if everthing works, and thanks for making the visit.

CD Release Dates.  ... this weekend in Oklahoma City and in Bartlesville... next weekend a pre-release party in Tulsa... and dates in Ft Worth and in Arlington, Texas.  More dates to be announced soon... We can't do this without you; and we wouldn't want to, so YOU COME, TOO!

******************************************************************************
The Blue Door.  (2815 No. McKinley Ave, Oklahoma City.)  Friday, 5 November, 8 pm.
CD Release Concert.  Always one of my favorite places to play, but this night will be extra-special.  With Terry 'Buffalo' Ware, Tom Skinner, Jack Abraham, the CherryPickers:  Michael Steed and Stephen Lee; and the Damn Quails will be opening the show.  The place is completely renovated.  We hope to see YOU; and Tootie too, will be there!

Frank & Lola's.  (2nd & Dewey, Bartlesville.)  Saturday, 6 November, 9 pm.  CD Release.  Withthe CherryPickers:  Michael Steed and Stephen Lee.  We love it here... and it's been quite a while since we've made it up to the lovely B-ville, so we're really looking forward to this.  Not to mention, the food is to die for.  Not exaggerating.  Really to die for.

Garden Deva Fall Festival.  (317 South Trenton Ave, Tulsa.)  Saturday, 6 November, 4:15 pm.  The best fall festival around, the only festival around where so much beauty abounds-- you will be astounded.  Beautiful sculpture, jewelry, hats, pottery, paintings, music, and seriously:  lots of beautiful women!  Come even if you're not a diva-- i'm not one and i go.

Open Door Coffee House.  (3321 West Park Row, Arlington, Texas.)  Saturday, 13 November, 7 pm.  First time here, so be on your best behaiour.

Madison Avenue House Concert.  (contact:  asmartin_5@hotmail.com for information and reservations.)  Sunday, 14 November, 4 pm.  Pre-CD-release, Tulsa.   A public cd release date for Tulsa will be in December; in the meantime, my dear friend, Andy is hosting this very special event in her home and she always surprises with delicious food... (which, i'm told, puts all other house concerts to shame.)  With special guests:  the CherryPickers, and more...

Fred's Texas Cafe.  (915 Currie Street, Ft Worth, Texas.)  Sunday, 21 November, 3 pm.
Always a great time at Fred's!  With the CherryPickers.

Rick's Cafe Americain.  (31st and Harvard, Tulsa.)  Tuesdays, 6:30 pm!  My home away from home...  the world will always welcome lovers... as time goes by...  AND, the only intersection in Tulsa without any road construction (...knock on wood...)

French Hen.  (71st and Yale, Tulsa.)  Fridays and/or Saturdays when i'm in Tulsa, 7 pm.
J'adore toujours La Poule Francaise... quand je suis en ville j'y suis la... pour jouer des chansons francaises, manger de la bonne nourriture, et boire du bon vin!
