Monica Taylor

Two shows to tell you about this weekend:

April 30th, Friday 7pm
Hootenanny at
The Hideaway
with The Farm Couple!

~and~
May 2, Sunday 2-6pm
*Plus I (Monica Taylor) will be playing with Don Morris this Sunday, May 2nd from 2-6pm, The Grape Ranch Vineyards, just  south of Woody Guthrie's hometown of Okemah, OK about 7 or 8 miles and then down a long winding country road to the ranch itself!

It will be a loverly day at The Grape Ranch Vineyards so come out, bring a picnic, if i were a kid (or if I wasn't playing music- ) I'd bring my bicycle and ride thru the pecan trees!
Don is one of Red Dirt music's favorite writers and busiest performers... I love it when we get to play shows together!

A little word about our Hootenanny shows at TheHideaway:

We are performing one last time until the fall at Stillwater's beloved pizza place- The Hideaway!!

We love doing this Hootenanny each month and we might try to do another one during the summer sometime… we'll let you know.  We each are scheduling lots of roamin' from town to town and state to state to play our music this summer so this will be our last show until October.  Hope you can come out tonight with a hunger for pizza, pasta, sandwiches folk music, sing-alongs, songwriters, pickers & grinners!   Great old Woody Guthrie, bluegrass, mountain, western swing.. and red dirt and self-penned tunes for your listenin' pleasure!

Friday, April 30th in Stillwater, OK at The Hideaway Pizza Place 7pm

Down beat is 7pm, open pickin' circle is after the supper and concert with The Farm Couple- about 8:30pm! This show is free but we will have cds for sale and the ever-present tip jar!  See you tonight!!

*  Chuck Dunlap and other pickers are rumored to be 'comin out to pick and grin' with The Farm Couple for this last big evening of great old bluegrass, swing, country, folk roots, red dirt, and gospel songs!  And of course, a few of these Oklahoma songwriters' OWN songs, which people enjoy so much!   If you're a picker, bring your instrument for the open jam session at 8:30pm that usually lasts till around 11pm.  So many great bluegrassers... and music of allkinds has been played at these jams.  Monica and Patrick enjoy hosting these very downhome gatherings... and people must really enjoy them- they pack the house each month.  Ya'll come on out for good food and good music- and good folks!

It's an all day and night extravaganza in the beautiful Bartlesville this Saturday... (good thing we really love this great Oklahoma town.)  We'll be bringing in my 29th birthday, too :-)  Come make a toast with us, with some Percy's Sweet Turkey Tea.  Slumber Party afterwards at the Frank Lloyd Wright Price Tower.  With the CherryPickers!

Opening Bell Coffeehouse.  (1409 South Lamar, Dallas, Texas.)  Wednesday, 12 May, 9 pm.
This is tentative.   Supposed to be the special guest at the Wednesday Night Science Project at Blue Dome Diner in downtown Tulsa, and it means i'll have to cancel my favorite thing to do on Wednesday in Tulsa in order to do this... (when will we be able to be two places at once?  and when will my jet-pack be ready?)  ... But still working on the new album in Austin and need to get back down there... so, well, we'll see...

Dosey Doe's.  (25911 I-45 North, the Woodlands, Texas.)  Friday, 14 May, 8:30 pm.

Fred's Texas Cafe.  (915 Currie Street, Ft Worth, Texas.)  Sunday, 23 May, 6 pm.

Travis Linville.... and shortly... Hollis Gray Linville...

Hello Fans, Friends and Family,

In case you havn't already heard, Heather and I are VERY excited to announce that we are expecting a baby boy at the end of June! Hollis Gray Linville will be here before we know it and of course we are absolutely thrilled, amazed and excited about this biggest adventure of all!

For now I'm having fun on the road with my good buddy Hayes Carll.  We are 4 shows into a 23 show run opening for Dierks Bentley's "Up on the Ridge" tour.  Dierks has the legendary Travelin' Mccoury's backing him up in support of his new bluegrass album.  Shows have been great so far and as always I'm having a ball playing with Hayes.

We are also into the pre-planning phase of ILLINOIS RIVER JAM in Tahlequah, OK.  Looks like this year we will wait for the fall weather to kick in for your camping comfort.  Dates will be Sept 24 and 25 so mark your calendars and  check back into the website often for location and lineups!

Norman Music Fest - Mama Sweet

Hello friends, So, this time last year we were all pumped because Mama Sweet was about to play the Sooner Theater for NMF. And boy, did you all bring it! That place was packed and your response and enthusiasm was incredible! This year our billing isn't as impressive, but I'm hoping that you all repeat your efforts this year & come in droves & remind them that Mama Sweet does, in deed, belong on the big stage! So,come out Saturday to Coach's BrewPub @ 8pm & bring down the house!!! I also encourage you all to sport your Mama Sweet tshirts on Sunday as you enjoy the outdoor day of the festival. Help us effect the group mentality by making them see Mama Sweet everywhere they look! Don't have a Mama Sweet shirt? Whitney will gladly sale you one at Coach's on Saturday @ 8pm! ;) Thanks for everything! MS

Tuesday, April 20th: JIMMY LAFAVE playing in Tulsa, OK tonight at The Blue Dome Diner @ 7:30pm

Hey friends and neighbors!

... join me tonight in Tulsa to hear Jimmy Lafave & Night Tribe!!

Red Dirt music at it's very best-   .

Jimmy LaFave plays Tulsa, OK's Blue Dome Diner tonight!!  April 20th, Tuesday night @ 7:30pm.  $15 at the door. His whole band will be with him... PLUS Joel Raphael will be opening up for the show.

Doors are at 7pm, the Blue Dome Diner is known in Tulsa as one of the absolute BEST places to dine and they will be serving dinner tonight.  (Thank you, Brian Prewitt.)

You can order whenever you want to before or during the show friends!!  Cool, huh?   Jimmy is on his way to KC, then Iowa, and onto Chicago this week!

This home-state man loves coming 'home' and looks forward to seeing friends and fans at this cool, old listening room:  The Blue Dome Diner & concert hall at about 2nd & Elgin.

See you all there tonight!!Jimmy LaFave

Jimmy LaFave was born in Wills Point, Texas, a small town 30 miles east of Dallas. He began school down the road in Mesquite and by Junior High was making music perched behind his Sears & Roebuck drum kit. It wasn't long before his mother traded a drawer full of green stamps for his first guitar and the switch to singer–songwriter was in progress.

Stillwater years... home
His family later moved to Stillwater, Oklahoma, where he finished high school. Although he has lived in Austin for over 20 years, many people think of him as being from Oklahoma, because of his strong musical ties to the state and what he often refers to as its "red dirt music." It was in this landscape that he began to define his sound and soak up a combination of his experiences among authentic songwriters from the tradition of Woody Guthrie. Before leaving Oklahoma for Austin, Jimmy did some independent recording and toured the southwest with the first version of his band Night Tribe.

Austin...
He moved to Austin in 1986, where he continued to write songs and to develop his musical ideas. Shortly after arriving he was asked to help launch the songwriter nights at the new performance venue Chicago House. In 1988 he recorded his self–produced tape, Highway Angels...Full Moon Rain, which won the Austin Chronicle Reader's Poll Tape of the Year Award. This led to a recording contract with a small independent label and allowed LaFave the opportunity to work with Bob Johnston, producer of several of LaFave's favorite albums including Bob Dylan's Blonde on Blonde and Nashville Skyline. Although these recordings were never released, by 1990 LaFave had put together an Austin version of Night Tribe and had become, according to the Austin American–Statesman, "a perennial presence upon the Austin music scene." In 1992 Jimmy released a self–produced CD, Austin Skyline, which drew international attention to his songwriting and vocal talents, and led to a publishing agreement with Polygram Music.

Due to his growing popularity and radio play on more than 200 stations, Austin Skyline and its label, Bohemia Beat, received national distribution through the Rounder Record Group. His second album, Highway Trance was released in 1994 followed by his third CD, Buffalo Return to the Plains, in 1995.

The grass roots demand and critical acclaim for Jimmy's music, which led to extensive touring in the United States and Europe, was recognized in 1996 when he was asked to tape a performance for the PBS musical series Austin City Limits, and was invited by Nora Guthrie to appear in Cleveland at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame tribute to Woody Guthrie. That same year LaFave won his second consecutive Austin Music Award for Best Singer–Songwriter. His fourth CD, Road Novel, which was released in early 1997, received many glowing reviews. That year he was asked by Nora Guthrie to speak and perform at the induction of Woody Guthrie into the Oklahoma Hall of Fame. He traveled to Europe twice that year and also toured the USA and Canada.

LaFave kicked off 1999 with the release of the CD entitled Trail, a 15 year retrospective of bootleg tapes, live performances, radio shows and studio out takes. The double CD contains 31 tracks recorded in Texas and around the world. Including 12 Dylan songs, it answered the demand of fans for a 'LaFave does Dylan' CD.

In the liner notes Dave Marsh noted: "Jimmy LaFave has one of America's greatest voices, and this album is the story of what he has learned to do with it. It's a unique instrument, with startling range and its own peculiar sense of gravity, liable to swoop in and wreck your expectations at any instant."

In 2001 Jimmy released Texoma. The CD received some of the best press of his career. including reviews by the Associated Press,VH–1, Billboard and Playboy. The ballad "Never Is A Moment" from the album, a radio favorite, became his most requested song ever.

Ribbon of Highway Tour...
That year when not playing his own musical dates, Jimmy toured with a Woody Guthrie tribute project he conceived entitled Ribbon Of Highway–Endless Skyway. The show features a rotating cast of notable musicians performing Woody's songs interspersed with narrations from his many writings. He also appeared that year at the annual Woody Guthrie Folk Festival. Jimmy serves on the Advisory Board for the festival, and has played it twelve straight years. He is always quick to acknowledge it as his favorite musical event.
In 2005 Jimmy signed with the indie label Red House Records, and released Blue Nightfall. This stunningly soulful album was LaFave's first in 4 years, and once again received many favorable reviews. In April, Jimmy was then honored when one of his musical heroes Bruce Springsteen invited him on stage for a duet at his show at the Nokia Arena in Dallas. Also that month Jimmy was very grateful when Nora Guthrie allowed him to look through the unseen lyrics from the Woody Guthrie Archives. She helped Jimmy choose 19 songs for a future "Woody" CD project, where he will co–write music for the lyrics using his own style and interpretations.
In early 2007 Cimarron Manifesto was Jimmy's second release on Red House Records where it spent several weeks as number one on the Americana music chart.

Music road records...
Later that year, Jimmy along with recording engineer Fred Remmert and Dallas businessman Kelcy Warren established Music Road Records. The label's first CD release was Ribbon Of Highway–Endless Skyway, a two disc set from the Woody Guthrie tribute tour. Music Road also owns and operates two Texas based recording facilities — Cedar Creek Recording in Austin and Cherokee Creek Recording in the Texas hill country.
As of 2009, Music Road will be releasing a compilation CD from Jimmy's Bohemia Beat Records back catalog, and Jimmy is currently recording a new yet untitled CD for Music Road due out early in 2010.

Also recording for Jimmy' label are:   Kevin Welch, John Fullbright, Ray Bonneville... and many others!
