Norman Music Festival 2011 hopes to another weekend

The 2011 Norman Music Festival is doing the bunny hop, jumping back a weekend to accommodate the Easter holiday weekend
Norman Music Festival 4 is now set for April 28-30, a week later than the original dates organizers recently announced.
Although it won’t be on its usual weekend, plans are still in place to expand the free event from two to three days, with the festivities spanning Thursday through Saturday. The first two days will take place primarily inside various Norman venues.
For the 2011 NMF, Saturday will be the big day, when outdoor stages go up in downtown Norman. Although next year’s festival won’t extend through Sunday, concerns were raised that the Easter weekend dates would conflict with Good Friday church services and Easter egg hunts, said 2011 NMF chairman Robert Ruiz.
“Because it (the main day) was going to be on a Saturday this year, we didn’t think it was going to be that much of an issue being on the same weekend as Easter,” Ruiz said. “But we did get quite a bit of feedback after we made the announcement public that there were some worries that it might interfere with some other activities and services and things like that. So we went ahead and made the change to move it to the following weekend.”
Norman Mayor Cindy Rosenthal applauded the decision to shift the NMF dates.
“I think there were a number of people who were concerned about it coinciding with Easter holiday weekend, and I think appropriately the Norman Music Festival took that under advisement and decided a change was probably a good thing,” she said. “The Norman Music Festival depends on using parking facilities many of which are under the control of churches in the area, so having access to adequate parking was certainly an issue.”
Moving the festival to the final weekend in April will allow it to coincide with other big events in Norman, including the Lion’s Carnival, ‘89er Day and, for the first time, the May Fair Arts Festival.
“Last year, we were in a situation where we were able to coordinate with the Lion’s Carnival and with ‘89er Day to have those three events on the same weekend. And that was a pretty nice experience. We definitely loved having the carnival right there,” Ruiz said. “Along with our kids’ stage and our arts market … it’s just one more thing for families to do there. We have an extremely diverse crowd, so there’s something for everybody.”
Also, he said the layout of the outdoor stages will be altered to allow the April 30 ‘89er Day Parade route to march right through the festival grounds. The main stage will be moved from its Main Street spot in front of the Sooner Theatre to the corner of Porter and Main.
“We think it has great impact for the community to have all those events on the same weekend for everyone to enjoy,” said Charles Hollingsworth, co-chairman of the Norman ‘89er Day Parade.
Although NMF4 now will again overlap with Oklahoma City’s downtown Festival of the Arts, Ruiz said he doesn’t expect that to significantly affect attendance for either event.
“It’s great to be at a point now where we’re no longer where we were a decade back when it was ‘OK, what’s the one art thing happening this month?’ Now there are several arts things going on in one weekend that people have to choose; it’s kind of a good thing to be in that situation,” he said.
“It will make Norman a real nice destination for that weekend with tons of things going on. … We’ll be very happy if we can make an event that will be as big as a (University of Oklahoma football) game day.”
Organizers haven’t decided what to do with the NMF dates beyond 2011.
“I think we’ll be open to looking at our dates. We’d probably like to keep our traditional date, but if this works in such a great way for the community and people feel like it’s a great way to approach these events, I think we’ll be open to considering that,” Ruiz said. “I think part of it is just seeing how it will turn out this year.”
The Norman Music Festival will again take place on the 100, 200 and 300 blocks of E Main Street downtown, east of the railroad tracks in the arts district. As in past years, the event will be free and open to everyone.
The search for nationally known headliners for NMF4 is under way. Past headliners have included Dirty Projectors, Leon Russell, Electric Six, The Sword, Of Montreal, Polyphonic Spree and Chainsaw Kittens.
Organizers hope to feature as many as 200 acts next year, with the roster made up primarily of local, state and regional performers. The open call for bands and solo artists started last week. For more information, go to www.normanmusicfestival.com.

The Strip's newest bar rocked its grand opening Saturday night.
Outlaws put on the Red Dirt for Red Cross benefit concert with several bands playing, including Red Dirt Rangers, Bo Phillips Band and Chad Sullins.
The bar was full of people and cowboy boots. Walking into the building, you feel as though you've driven one hour south and hit up Oklahoma City's Bricktown.
The new joint has a roomy dance floor, and plenty of room for two-stepping and spins. The rustic atmosphere and size of the bar counter set it apart from some of the others, and there were plenty of bartenders quickly taking drink orders.
"Even though there were a lot of people, it never felt as crowded as most bars can feel," business management junior, Nicole Snowden said. "I'm excited for Outlaws, I think it makes a nice addition to The Strip, plus it has a great dance floor,"
The bar smells new; the scent of freshly-cut wood wafted through the air. The rustic decorations are a nice touch, too.
"Outlaws is by far the nicest bar on the strip," accounting and finance junior, Joe White said.

A new club on the Strip teams up with a local emergency response organization to open its doors with a bang and a fundraiser. Outlaws, 501 S. Washington St., the newest attraction on the Strip, will open Saturday at 7 p.m. to host the second annual Red Dirt for Red Cross fundraiser.
I predict Outlaws is going to be a big hit with the college crowd, which will hopefully benefit the American Red Cross and local displaced families this weekend. Outlaws is a large, two-story club that can hold more than 800 partygoers. It is decorated with dozens of neon light fixtures advertising beer, four 150-inch flat-screen TVs and a few smaller flat-screen TVs around the bar if larger ones weren't enough. It has two bars and a large dance floor. The club, when open for regular business, will have a DJ every night and feature live bands at least once a week.
The north-central Oklahoma chapter of the American Red Cross helps local families who have experienced a disaster. It takes care of their "emergency needs by providing vouchers for groceries, clothing, and glasses," among other things, said Vicki Henington, the director of the fundraiser. It will also provide housing in a hotel for families that need it.
The chapter has already helped four families in the last two weeks who have been troubled by home fires. The Red Cross raised nearly $6,000 last year at the event and hopes to raise the same this year, if not more, Henington said. Any cash donation will get you in the event, but the first 100 people to donate $10 will receive a $5 gift card to Louie's Grill & Bar. There will also be a silent auction featuring items such as an OSU autographed football and basketball, a new iKICK by KICKER, a Twilight movie pack and much more from 7-10:30 p.m.
The event includes some of the best Red Dirt bands around as entertainment. Red Dirt is a genre of music musician Bo Phillips described as an alterative mix of rock and country that originated in Stillwater. The line up includes Bo Phillips Band, Red Dirt Rangers, Chad Sullins and the Last Call Coalition, Kevin Pickett and Southern Rain, Taylor Atkinson, Robby Vanvekoven, and Josh Boyles. Bo Phillips Band's new single "Never" has reached Top 40 on the Texas Music Chart. This will be the second year for the band to participate in the event. Lead singer and Oklahoma State University alumnus Bo Phillips said he wants to give back to the community and help others.

Tulsa Street Honors Oklahoma Legend Leon Russell
After months of petitioning, the City of Tulsa has designated a portion of Third Street from Peoria to Utica Avenues in honor of Oklahoma music icon, Leon Russell. The location of the road is unique in that it encompasses the Pearl District, a diverse area known for its creative arts-oriented businesses including The Church Studio, where Russell and countless friends of his recorded music.
Leon Russell Road was the result of an online Facebook campaign which inspired native Tulsan and music enthusiast Charles Roden to submit a formal proposal to the city. Residents and businesses in the community were pleased to welcome Leon Russell Road to their area. During the street's grand-opening celebration in November, David Strader, president of the Pearl District Neighborhood Association, told the crowd that Russell's music "continues to inspire people all over the world."
Johnny Williams, a Tulsa musician who has played with Russell throughout his career, noted that Russell was touched by the distinction when they spoke about it earlier this month, "He almost cried." Williams said.
Russell's decade-spanning career has hit another high note this year, as he is currently touring with Elton John in promotion of their recent, critically-acclaimed album The Union. Russell first made waves on the Billboard charts in 1972 with the release of his album,Carney, which featured hits including "Tight Rope" and "This Masquerade." In addition to his solo ventures, Russell is known for his work with artists such as Eric Clapton, The Rolling Stones, and Bob Dylan.
With this honor, Leon Russell now joins the ranks of other Tulsa musicians who have received honorary streets including The GAP Band and Bob Wills.

Radio play. Rich Warren, WFMT Chicago DJ and revered host of The Midnight Special out of Chicago, recommended the new CD All Fall Down in his "Rich's Picks" and played "The Bad Roads of Oklahoma" on his Saturday night show (apparently they have bad roads in Illinois too.) It will eventually be on the national show sometime in late January or early February. And we understand that John Wooley has been playing "Oklahoma Girl" on his great Saturday night show, Swing on This, on KWGS. And we're told that Davit Souders is playing some of the new tunes on his cool Monday night show on RSU radio. Thanks guys!
