LAST WEEK TO GET YOUR TICKETS FOR
10TH ANNUAL DWIGHT BOECKMAN FESTIVAL IN OKEENE, OKLAHOMA ON AUGUST 1ST!

NO JUSTICE CONCERT PROCEEDS TO BENEFIT THE CHRISTOPHER REEVE PARALYSIS FOUNDATION AND THE MIAMI PROJECT!

For immediate release: Contact: Brandy Reed (615) 830-3508

Nashville, TN-Saturday, August 1, 2009 marks the 10th Annual Dwight Boeckman Festival at the Okeene Baseball Field in Okeene, OK. The festival is an all-day, all-ages event featuring a headlining performance by Red-dirt rockers and Oklahoma natives No Justice. Other performances include Johnny Cooper, the Bart Crow Band, Clint Osmus & The Bushmills, Rich O’Toole, Mama Sweet, and many more. This event is all ages. Gates open at 4:00 PM. Free food with admission. Tickets are $20 through July 31st and $30 day of event.

The event is held every year in honor of Dwight Boeckman who, in July 2000 at just 22 years old, suffered a spinal cord injury in a diving accident which resulted in paralysis from the chest down. The festival was originally created to help Dwight and his family with medical expenses, but by 2005 had surpassed Dwight’s needs and thus shifted its focus towards helping others. Tragically, Dwight was killed in an automobile accident in fall 2005, but the festival continues to honor his legacy and his dream to raise funds which will assist with research on spinal cord injury paralysis. Proceeds from this year’s benefit will go to The Christopher Reeve Paralysis Foundation and The Miami Project – a paralysis research facility in Florida that Dwight attended. The hope is to eventually find a cure.

Dwight Boeckman was born and raised in and around the community of Okeene where the festival is still held today. Thanks to the endless support of family and friends, Dwight was able to give back to the community who had been so very generous to him during the most challenging years of his life. Before he passed, Dwight was able to help leave his mark by establishing the “Challenge of Life” scholarship, which is awarded to a student graduating with high honors who has found time to make a difference while making the grade. Diller Calls Free Web Content a ‘Myth, Joins Refrain (click to read full version)

By Brett Pulley and Andy Fixmer

July 24 (Bloomberg) -- Barry Diller, chairman and chief executive officer ofIAC/InterActiveCorp, said Web users will have to pay for what they watch and use, joining the refrain of media moguls who say an era of free Internet content is ending.

The media and technology executive, whose company runs the Ask.com search engine and the Match.com dating service, said it’s “mythology” to view the Internet as a system of free communications.

“It is not free, and is not going to be,” Diller said today at the Fortune Brainstorm conference in Pasadena, California. In addition to IAC, he is chairman of Expedia Inc., the online travel service, and Ticketmaster Entertainment Inc.

Diller, 67, joined a group of media chiefs, from Liberty Media Corp.’s John Malone to Walt Disney Co. CEO Robert Iger, who are challenging the accepted model that consumers pay for Internet access and then content is free. Diller predicted there will be three revenue streams: advertising, subscriptions and transactions.

Disney, the world’s biggest media company, is developing a subscription-based product for the Internet, Iger said on July 22 at the conference.

Wilco

Wilco

RS: 4 of 5 Stars Average User Rating:4of 5 Stars

2009

Wilco's seventh studio album is a triumph of determined simplicity by a band that has been running from the obvious for most of this decade. The title is the giveaway. So is the opening gag, "Wilco (The Song)," with its rattling-bones guitar and singer-boss Jeff Tweedy's assurance, sung like pillow talk, that his combo is good for all that ails you: "Do you dabble in depression?/Is someone twisting a knife in your back?...Wilco will love you, baby." At times, Wilco (The Album) sounds like the scarring static and cryptic impressionism of 2002's Yankee Hotel Foxtrot never happened. The Seventies-George Harrison sunshine in "You Never Know" and the country-rock clatter of "Sonny Feeling" are closer to Wilco's Big Star-in-a-barn debut, 1995's A.M.

The clarity comes at a price. The fear, failure and violence in Tweedy's lyrics and gently racked singing are as sharply drawn as the baroque-Zombies flourishes in "Deeper Down" and the sweet sexual tangle of voices in "You and I," Tweedy's duet with the Canadian singer Feist. That is literally blood splattered across the thickening garage-guitar stutter of "Bull Black Nova": "It's in my hair/It's on my clothes," Tweedy sings like a mounting-guilt mantra. But what is most striking about the restraint here is the elegance and defiance packed inside. "One Wing" is spacious heartbreak with a fish-hook chorus and guitars that loop and swoop. And the fierce, repeated devotion in "I'll Fight" comes at you with the minimal insistent drive of Bob Dylan's "I Want You." If Top 40 radio had any room for rock, "I'll Fight" might be Wilco's breakthrough hit. Instead, it's just another great way to say they love you.

DFest Preview: Sherree Chamberlain

Sherree Chamberlain
Photo: Jeremy Charles

As we prepare for DFest, we will be speaking with a few Oklahoma acts who will be playing this weekend in Tulsa.

Endearing listeners with carefully crafted lyrics and delicate and passionate vocals Sherree Chamberlain is one of Oklahoma’s most captivating talents. After recently leaving her musical family in Stillwater for Oklahoma City, the 23-year-old songstress is going for broke, musically. Chamberlain says she’s “happy as hell” and “more creatively fulfilled” than ever, studying music theory, writing and playing a slew of shows. She recently released her album, The Wasp in the Room, on iTunes, with help from members of Bright Eyes, Sufjan Stevens’ band, Ester Drang and Nine Inch Nails.

Sherree Chamberlain plays Saturday at 11:30pm at McNellie’s.

Your long-awaited album, The Wasp in the Room, is now out on iTunes. Can we expect an album release party anytime soon?

I have a few dates set - August 29th with the Uglysuit in Stillwater, Sept. 4th with Jacob Abello in Norman. I don’t know if I’ll have an “official” CD release in OKC - I’m too excited to hold off. I’m selling them whenever and wherever. They’ll be for sale at Dfest! I am as happy as a clam. I wish I could just throw free records at people for days.

LISTEN: Sherree Chamberlain - “Windmill Wings” (myspace)

Where did you record the album, who else plays on it and how do you feel to finally have the album out?

We recorded the majority of the record at with Chad Copelin at Blackwatch Studio in Norman. He is brilliant. Everyone should work with that man. Through him however, I was able to have some amazing musicians collaborate with me on the record. The drums were done by James McAlister (of Sufjan Stevens, Ester Drang), Bass by Justin Meldal-Johnson (of Beck, Nine Inch Nails), string arrangements by Nathaniel Walcott (of Bright Eyes), guitar by Casey Foubert (Sufjan Stevens). It was mixed by Chris Testa in L.A. who just finished working on Jimmy Eat World’s last record. Somehow Chad was able to throw in all these musicians from across the U.S. with our solid local musicians and blend it all into something very unique. I feel fortunate. I feel humbled. But mainly I’m just happy as hell.

I read where you recently said that you are more proactive with your music that you ever have been. Was there a turning point for you or something that just clicked?

I’m not sure there was a defining moment I can pinpoint, but graduating college was probably a good step in the right direction. I’ve always had school to hide behind. Once I finished I just kind of woke up and realized I’m not 16 anymore. I’m almost 23 and I can either go get a 9 -5 job and be comfortable, or be broke and just go for it. Thus far I’m choosing to be broke . . . ha. It’s pretty scary, but I am more creatively fulfilled now than I have been in a really long time.

What does the next year look like for you, musically?

It looks like a big mixture of courage and humility.

Taking a few risks, always being open to learning and stretching my creativity. I know for sure that we’ll be booking more shows in state and out of state. I’m trying my hand at co-writing, taking guitar lessons, teaching myself more theory, and surrounding myself with a community of artists for support. Growth is one of the most exciting things. I feel like such an awkward teenager right now musically. It’s kind of fun.

Other Lives, Colourmusic, Mayola and you really changed the way music coming out of Stillwater is viewed. How does all this great indie music come out of a place that’s mostly known for red dirt and country music?

Geez, talking about Stillwater makes me so homesick. I have never been in a place so supportive and open to different ideas. I think all of the artists there understand that we all have a mutual goal we are all shooting for. It incestuous and infectious. Everybody plays in everybody’s band, everybody goes to each others’ shows. It is both inspiring and comforting. It’s an extremely safe environment to try new things. That’s why great things come out, there are really no rules - just a very pure and honest appetite for new experiences and sounds.

What other bands are you excited about seeing at DFest?

I think I’m going to need a segway to get to every show I want to go to without having my legs fall off.

Jacob Abello, Beau Jennings, Brine Webb, Ali Harter, Dead Sea Choir, Gentleman Auction House,Mayola, Ryan Lindsey, Other Lives, Pretty Black Chains, Vandevander, Maggie McClure, The JonBear Fourtet, Western Heritage, The Uglysuit, . . . . my list could last for miles.

Static: Fiawna Forte

George Lang and NewsOK.tv have unveiled the next installment of the music performance and interview series, “Static”.

This week’s guest is Fiawna Forte.

She talks about finding musicians for her band, delving into acting and her next steps as an artist.

Fiawna Forte plays Saturday at 10:10pm on the Dilly Deli Patio.

This will be the last episode of Static’s first season, which should return in mid-September. As always, George Lang and Tanner Herriott have done a great job.
