Oktoberfest

Firstly, let us say what a vorpal time we had at Oktoberfeszt!

Mad Dog was on bass on this gig – he is now our Friday night bassist, no longer just auxiliary bassist. His Madness has worked many years at Oktoberfest, and he knows many of the German musicians. They have come out to some of our gigs to hear real American rock and roll. That’s what most of these guys play at home. They come over here and do trad German Volksmusick.

Mark Morgan was at the board and got a pretty decent recording of our set. You can hear a portion of it here:

Zigs At Oktoberfest

It was a thrill to be on a big festival stage with a good PA and hundreds of people carrying on. It was tons of fun.

And the food! Law-zee, it was the best Brautwurst in the western hemisphere to be sure. They must’ve imported it from the fatherland. The Reubens were good and so were the schnitzels and spaetzels and schnauzers and schnitzengrubers. Gesundheit!

We would like to thank the committee and on behalf of the group we hope we passed the audition. They may have us back next year, and if so we might bill ourselves as Der Ziegs.

We are normally half German anyway, with Ziegler and Raffensperger. Mad Dog is of the Swedish Johnsons, so that’s close. Or maybe he’s from the Rock Ridge Johnsons.

Say ‘Ahh!’

Now look here guys. This message is to all you t-town boomer era musicians. We have an exceptional track record here; a vast array of talent from Tulsa during the fifties sixties and seventies. Many of that generation are still working. Many of us had great moments in the spotlight. The story needs to be told while it is still possible to tell it. Many have said that I should write the book on it, but I don’t have the time. I have my own book to write, a full time job, a band or two, and a flock of ankle-biters. Besides, even though I know a lot of the story, nobody knows all of it.

Teb Blackwell is writing THE book on Tulsa Rock And Roll. He and I have had a hard time getting people to put in their two cents worth. I know, we’ve been under-appreciated, under-compensated and overlooked and it seems like nobody cares. But this is a story that deserves to be preserved and this may be the last chance to tell it, before we’re all dead.

If you have any amusing anecdotes about the era, please send them to this address and we’ll forward them to be included in the book. If your band put out a record, we need to know that too. If you got signed by Columbia and then shelved, join the club and we need your story. If you can’t type, just write in “I have a story” and add a phone number. We take dictation. So speak up, boys and girls. You can remain anonymous.

Does anyone know who was in the band TKO? We have a demo here and we don’t know who the band is.

Back In Town

People are always asking when we are going to play in Tulsa. We tried to get together with Blues City and on the dates they had open we were already booked. However, we will be back at Scarlett’s at 6400 East 15th on December the eighth, John Lennon’s Birthday.

The day after thanksgiving we’ll be at Mooney’s. We will also be there December 22 for the annual Zigs Christmas Party and we may again have special guests this year. You can see pictures of some of our Christmas parties on the web site.

Also, keep tabs on our MySpace page. We are starting to get the hang of that – the kids are helping us. We have new pictures and a blog started and lots of new friends, including a link to our beloved pal and former Zigs singer Phil Seymour.

We would also like to encourage people to take the annual trip to Muskogee for the Oklahoma Music Hall Of Fame concert. Music lovers should go to this. It’s a lot of entertainment for $20, and a lot of music history too. Hinder did a respectable unplugged set, Tommy Crook got a well-deserved standing ovation and Three Dog Night – in a tribute to Hoyt Axton - was better than ever. See my coverage of this year’s inductions at tulsatoday.com in the entertainment section.

Zig Movie Viewer¸¸¸

The Experience Project has released a set of DVDs called The American Folk Blues Festival 1962-1969. Some of this seems to be concerts in Germany, and some of it was shot on a soundstage, apparently on video. This is some great blues footage. Artists include Sleepy John Estes with Yank Rachel, Son House, Sonny Boy Williamson, Muddy, Wolf, Buddy Guy, Roosevelt Sykes, Memphis Slim, Willie Dixon, Big Mama Thornton, T-Bone Walker, Victoria Spivey, Koko Talyor, John Lee Hooker, Earl Hooker and more. Everybody who is important who was alive in the early sixties is in this set. Blues fans must get this – what a goldmine!
