The passing of Redbone's Anthony Bellamy
PASSES ON AT AGE 69
New York, NY – The Native American Music Awards (N.A.M.A.) organization is deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Redbone's Anthony Bellamy, who has died on Christmas morning, December 25th, 2009 in Las Vegas, Nevada with his family by his side. Anthony, or Tony "T-Bone" Bellamy, who attended the 10th Annual Native American Music Awards and was inducted into the N.A.M.A. Hall of Fame with Redbone in 2008, was a Mexican-American Yaqui Indian who became the lead guitarist, pianist and vocalist for the Native American band.. He was a beloved and endearing friend of the "Nammys" since its inception, and will be greatly missed.
Redbone became established as a Native American rock group in the 1970s. They reached the Top 5 on the Billboard Hot 100 charts in 1974 with the hit song, "Come and Get Your Love."
Originally formed in 1969 in Los Angeles, California by brothers Patrick Vasquez (bass and vocals) and Lolly Vasquez (guitar and vocals), the name Redbone started as a joking reference to a Cajun term for a mixed-race person ("half-breed"). The band's members were of mixed blood ancestry.
According to Patrick Vasquez aka Pat Vegas, it was Jimi Hendrix who talked the musicians into forming an all-Native American rock group and so they signed as the band Redbone to Epic Records in 1969. The band consisted of Patrick Vasquez, Lolly Vasquez, drummer Pete DePoe and Anthony "Tony" Bellamy. Their debut album Redbone was released in 1970.
Redbone played primarily rock music with R&B, Cajun, Jazz, tribal and Latin roots. Their first commercial success was with the single, "Maggie" from their second album, Potlatch, in 1970. Two other hit singles would follow; "The Witch Queen of New Orleans" in 1971, which went to #21 on the Billboard Hot 100, and their greatest hit song to date, "Come and Get Your Love" in 1974, which went to #5 on the Billboard Hot 100. "Come and Get Your Love", stayed in the Billboard charts for 24 weeks, and was awarded a gold disc by the R.I.A.A. on April 22, 1974.
Tony Bellamy grew up in a family of dancers and musicians and learned to play the flamenco guitar as part of his musical education. Before joining the band Redbone, Tony Bellamy had performed with Dobie Gray, and a was a member of the San Francisco band, Peter and the Wolves, that evolved into the psychedelic band Moby Grape.
In 1998, Tony Bellamy and Patrick Vasquez performed as Redbone at the First Native American Music Awards held at the Foxwoods Casino in Conneticut.
On October 4, 2008, Tony Bellamy and Patrick Vasquez attended the 10th Annual Native American Music Awards at the Seneca Niagara Hotel & Casino in Niagara Falls, NY as special guests to accept Redbone's induction into the N.A.M.A. Hall of Fame.
Born as Anthony Avila, Tony Bellamy died at age 69.
N.A.M.A. and its Advisory Board contingency would like extend their condolences to the Bellamy family. N.A.M.A. will forever honor this legendary performer who has been both a leading force in the mainstream music industry and an inspiration to the Native American community.

Well, things have been super hectic around here! I've been super busy writing songs, trying to get enough material ready to be able to start thinking about working on a new album! I know alot of you guys have been asking when we're gonna come out with a new one...and all I can say is...I don't know! Haha! The writing process for this next album is going to be different from the first one...I wanna make sure the next album is very much "me" and so I'm being picky about it! :) Just bare with me guys!
I hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving last month! It's always good to get together with the family and have a few days to just hang out!
Christmas is this week! Yay! :) I know everyone is excited about that! The band is off this weekend, however I am playing a few acoustic gigs this week, so I wanted to let everyone know!
Wednesday, December 23rd I'll be playing a solo acoustic show at Crow Creek Tavern in Tulsa, OK starting at 9pm! Crow Creek is a regular acoustic gig for me, so if you guys are in the Tulsa area on the 23rd, c'mon out and hang with me! Crow Creek is at 36th and Peoria, so I hope to see some of you guys there!
Then Friday, December 25th I'll be playing a solo acoustic show at...Crow Creek Tavern! Haha! They asked me if I wanted to play a Christmas show and so I said heck yeah! If you guys are gonna be around and done with the family stuff, then come out and have some fun with me! :) I'll start at 9pm again! See you guys on Christmas!
And lastly, but certainly not leastly, on Saturday, December 26th I'm playing with a bunch of friends from back in the day at the Flytrap Music Hall in Tulsa, OK for the Family Reunion Show 2009! I'm playing solo acoustic along with Andy Skib, Bryan Jewett, Josh Center, Robby Merrick, and a whole bunch more! So definitely come out to that show! I believe the show starts at 7pm, so get there early and come see a bunch of friends pickin' and grinnin'!
I hope you all have a very Merry Christmas and hopefully I'll see some of you at one (or all) of the shows this week!

Hey guys first off, I've heard from a few people you haven't been getting the emails...so I think that's been fixed so I'm gonna put a disclaimer here. I know if you don't get this then that means it still is not working, and you won't even be able to read this disclaimer! Ha! I hope this makes it to you all though!
I'm writing you all from North Carolina right now! I'm hanging out with my good friends and surprised them on their last shows out on tour! Always love a good surprise! Ha!
I've been super busy working on writing songs and recording music all over the country! I've been in Nashville and Austin and all places in between! Wouldn't trade it for anything though! Thank you all for letting me and the guys do what we do. We sure do appreciate the chance, and I want you all to know that!
This weekend we've got shows in Pocola, OK (right outside of Ft. Smith, AR) at the Choctaw Casino! It's ALWAYS a blast there and we can't wait to get down there! We play there both Friday and Saturday night and both nights we start at8pm! Come out and see us and let's make the party even bigger than it was last time!
Friday, December 4th
Choctaw Casino
Pocola, OK

Saturday, December 5th

See ya guys this weekend!
Mama Sweet
I hope you all had a good holiday. I prepared a 24lb turkey for the "Friendsgiving" I had at my house and ate way too much of the beautiful bird. So, I am excited about getting back to the grind. Maybe by Christmas, I'll be able to work off all the food I ate at Thanksgiving.
On Friday (December 4th), we will be playing at The Deli in Norman, OK. It is our last Deli show before the end of the school semester and first of the post-football season (My Soonbums sure lived up to their nickname this season). So, I think it is going to be a fun-filled night and hope that you all take the opportunity to join us! We'll get the festivities kicked off sometime around 10:30pm.
On Saturday (December 5th), we get to play a new place. We are heading off to Diamond, Missouri to play Lucky Maggies! You all know how I feel about our first time at a new place. I get nervous that no one will be there or like us and yet I'm giddy too. So, it is really important to me that as many of you come out to see us as is humanly possible. I've heard great things about Lucky Maggies and am excited to finally play there. I hope that you will join us.
Also, I will be back at Libby's in Goldsby, OK this Wednesday (and pretty much every Wednesday). The patio where we play gets enclosed and heated during the winter. So, its really a nice place to come out and enjoy some great songs. Plus, the catfish is AWESOME!
Don't forget to follow us on Twitter, find us on Facebook, and be our friend on Myspace. And, be sure to have your friends sign up for our mailing list at www.mamasweet.com. Thanks for your support!
Toodles.
