Jay Wilkinson, the coordinator of Jazz Studies at the University of Oklahoma, will bring his trio to the Norman Depot, 200 S. Jones Ave., to present the third concert in the 2009 Performing Arts Studio Jazz Series. Admission is free for the concert, which begins 7:30 p.m. March 15. Light refreshments will be served.
Jay Wilkinson received his BME and MM from OU and began doctoral study at the University of North Texas last fall. He has contributed an article on the life of Chet Baker for "The Great Plains Encyclopedia," has performed on recordings with various pop and blues bands, and has been a judge at the National Trumpet Competition.
Wilkinson has been awarded citations for outstanding performances for both trumpet and piano and is the lead singer for two local dance bands. He was a featured soloist in 2006 at the Oklahoma Music Educators Association convention.
Jay spends a great deal of time arranging and composing. He is sought after by local musicians, music educators and other professionals to write various styles of music. Wilkinson is a member of the OU Brass Quintet. He is also a member of the Lyric Theater Orchestra and the Oklahoma City Philharmonic.
Rounding out the trio are John Cole playing bass and Joe Bob Nelson on guitar.
Attendees can enjoy "Passion for the Land," the paintings of Rick Fry, while in the Depot for the concert.
Both Jazz Concerts and Gallery Exhibitions at the Performing Arts Studio are made possible in part by grants from the Norman Arts Council, the Oklahoma Arts Council and the National Endowment for the Arts.
The Performing Arts Studio gallery and office are open from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesday through Friday and from 1 to 5 p.m. most Sundays. Visit www.thepas.org, or call 307-9320 for additional information about PAS programs.
