Local band Q&A: Luma

Local band Q&A: Luma

Michael Senior, Oklahoman.com

Why: Oklahoma City four-piece Luma presents a gripping sound and live performance. Luma's songs have a way of entrancing you and hooking you in to the melody and groove. For a taste, check them out online at www.myspace.com/lumarock and www. lumarock.com. Look for Luma to release a live DVD in the coming months.

When: 9 tonight.

Where: Belle Isle Brewery, 50 Penn Place.

Q:What is the typical creative process?

A:Marcus Collins, bass: Sometimes I'll just bring in an idea. Most of the time, it ends up being Stephen coming in with an idea on the guitar, and then we usually build from there. Sometimes he has a structure already built out, but other times, we're just jamming through something and it continues to form, Hunter starts singing a melody. ... The structure of the songs comes in, and we add the lyrics to it.

A:Stephen Collins, guitar: By the end of it, it's very collaborative. The song becomes what it is after all four of us get on it. That's kind of the attitude of the band, too; it's all four of us making decisions.

Q:Is there some kind of underlying theme or message in the music?

A:Hunter Goodman, vocals: I think they're all generally up, the themes to the songs. A lot of music nowadays is very down, a lot of stuff in the world is very down, and we just like having a positive theme on stuff.

A:Stephen Collins: We definitely try to come with a positive approach.

Q:What is your ideal vision for Luma in the future?

A:Stephen Collins: Definitely to be a national and international act of the highest level. Packing out venues like the Ford Center on a national level. It's not just an empty goal to get to that level — I mean, with that place comes influence, and we hope to use that influence in a positive way.

A:Adam Chamberlain, drums: We definitely have high standards for what we're doing; we want to do it as good as possible and be the best at what we're doing. We want to create an experience rather than just a concert — something memorable that'll actually impact you instead of being just another show.
