Award-winning recording artist, Johnny Cooper assists the Lawton Arts & Humanities Council by helping to sponsor an auction item for the Arts for All Gala, the annual fundraiser set for October 20, 7 pm at Patriots Inn on Ft. Sill.
Many may remember Johnny’s live acoustical performance at the documentary film premiere of “North of Austin/West of Nashville: Red Dirt Music", a Cameron University student production this past summer. He is one of the featured musicians in the film. At 19, he is one of the fastest rising young musician/songwriters from North Texas. The “Godfather of Red Dirt Music”, Bob Childers recognizing Johnny talents, considers him to be the 4th generation to embrace this musical style.
The Lawton Arts and Humanities Council, after learning of his early involvement in the arts through dance and music from his equally talented parents, approached them with the idea of sponsoring an item for the fundraiser. “Supporting the Arts is in our blood. Anything we can do to help, is what we will do.” says Johnny Cooper
The items selected for the auction are reflective of either Johnny, the Red Dirt Music Fan, or for someone who may want to learn more about Red Dirt Music. Included are his autographed “Ignition” CD, T-shirts, and folding chairs with his name on them; Johnny Cooper poster, road trip nibbles and libations, map, gas card, tour schedule, CU documentary poster, and other fun items guaranteed to make any Red Dirt Music Road Trip a little more pleasant.
The council hopes that the patrons at the gala will have as much fun bidding on this item as it was to work with Johnny. Other sponsors on the item include SW Sales Inc., CU Department of Communications, and Monkey Business.
Sharon Cheatwood who worked on the CU documentary will offer as a bonus to the winning bid over $100.00 her personal copy of the film, “North of Austin West of Nashville: Red Dirt Music” (official website at http://reddirtmusic.wetpaint.com ). If someone is interested in this package but cannot attend the gala, please call the Lawton Arts and Humanities Council at 580-581-3470 or 581-3471 to find out how to do remote bidding.
