If you see any bands at Tulsa's Dfest, see these:
1. The Flaming Lips, 11 p.m. Friday, Main Festival Stage: The Oklahoma City mad-hatters' September show at OKC's Zoo Amphitheatre presented an unequaled visual spectacle and the debut of the band's UFO. My mind is still blown.
2. Crooked X, 1 1 p.m. Friday, First Street Lofts Lounge: Tulsans, and anybody else for that matter, should take any chance they can to see these 13-year-olds, who rock harder than granite. Bring your earplugs.
3. Stevedore, 10 p.m., Friday, Second Festival Stage: Brothers Noah and Jeff Richardson's electro/new wave/pop experiment forges on boldly where no one has gone before.
4. P.D.A., 1 a.m., Sunday, First Street Lofts Lounge: You can't find his musical, Prince-like hip hop album, "Act II: A Different Victim," in stores, but they are available at his shows. This Tulsa hip hop gem seems to have his fingers in almost every local rap album that's worth its weight in gold teeth.
5. Ganem, 8 p.m., Friday, Blank Slate: Newsflash! I.J. Ganem's son Morgan is driven by a burning fire to rock. His band is a modern rock act with three-part harmonies fronted by a guy who can actually sing. Check him out before he's famous.
6. Congress of a Crow, 10 p.m., Friday, Blue Dome Diner: This bright, shiny Tulsa rock band, fronted by singer Danelle Phillips, is tighter live than beer and fried chicken. Under new management and with a new album completed, this is a good time to see Phillips and her boys before hike the price of tickets.
7. Elliott the Letter Ostrich, 1 a.m., Sunday, Continental Club: The Letter Ostrich puts on a uniquely entertaining live show that makes the listener want to shake it while imparting core life lessons. Maybe we'll hear cuts from the band's upcoming double-album.
8. The Effects, 10 p.m., Saturday, Blank Slate: Tulsa's pop rock warriors continue to soldier on across the nation with Bang Bang Bang and Autovaughn. The Effects are an energetic, strutting and bright live band -- one of those acts that could be the next big thing at any time.
9. Dangerous Rob, 10 p.m. Saturday, First Street Lofts Lounge: Dangerous Rob, also known as Tulsan Robert Daniels, will bring the gangsta funk live, the kind previously known to be bumping in your trunk. His album, "Itz a Dangerou$ World," boasts tracks that bounce in a manner reminiscent of early 1990s-era West Coast rap.
10. South 40, 11 p.m., Saturday Dirty's Tavern: Northeastern Oklahoma's melodic country rockers have a sound that, like their brethren the Red Dirt Rangers, seems to make the prairie grass grow long and tall. While you're there, pick up the band's album, "Home." It's worth a listen.
P.S. And let's not forget singer/songwriter T.J. McFarland, who performs at 10 p.m. Friday at Dirty's Tavern and Tranny, kicking it at 9 p.m. on Arnie's Festival Stage also on Friday. See also My Solstice and Ghosts.
