ADA—“Turquoise Rose,” a film from Navajo writer/director Holt Hamilton, will be the first film shown in the Holba’ Kana’li (Moving Pictures) Film Series beginning 7 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 25, 2009 at the McSwain Theatre.
An initiative hosted by the performing arts department of the Chickasaw Nation Division of Arts and Humanities, the Holba’ Kana’li Film Series intends to bring focus to Native American-made independent films.
Barrick said that the series of Native American produced films will address issues that face Native Americans and Indigenous peoples.
“We hope these films will not only be entertaining, but promote conversation and dialogue that will build bridges of understanding.”
Hamilton will be present at the screening to meet patrons and participate in a question and answer session after the film.
“Mr. Hamilton has dedicated himself to helping indigenous peoples all over the world tell their stories from their own perspectives,” Ms. Barrick said.
A veteran of the United States Army, Hamilton wrote “Turquoise Rose” in 2003 while deployed in Iraq.
The film follows Turquoise, an urban college student and photographer who is forced to choose between traveling through Europe and returning to the “Rez” to take care of her ailing grandmother.
