EDMONDLynn Seaton, a jazz bassist who has performed around the world, returns to Oklahoma to play at the University of Central Oklahoma Jazz Lab.

"I was born in Tulsa and lived in Norman from 1975-80. It is always a thrill to return to my home state to play,” Seaton said.

Seaton, who has played on more than 100 recordings, is an associate professor with the jazz program at the University of North Texas in Denton.

Seaton performs at 8 p.m. Monday at UCO Jazz Lab.

The Jazz Lab has provided a good experience for the audience, Seaton said.

"They certainly are close enough to interact and listen intimately to the music,” he said.

Seaton began playing the string bass at age 9.

He worked in clubs around the state while studying music at the University of Oklahoma.

In 1980, he moved to Cincinnati to join the Steve Schmidt Trio and the Blue Wisp Big Band.

A year later, he earned a National Endowment for the Arts fellowship to study with bassist Rufus Reid.

He later played with the Count Basie Orchestra and toured with singer Tony Bennett and pianist George Shearing.

Seaton has several critically acclaimed recordings including "Bassman’s Basement.”

In addition, he played on the Grammy Award-winning "Diane Schuur and the Count Basie Orchestra” and the Grammy-nominated "Woody Herman 50th Anniversary.”

Seaton is a member of the Oklahoma Jazz Hall of Fame.

Tickets are $10 and can be purchased by calling 359-7989. The Jazz Lab is at 100 E Fifth St.
