Gettin’ Funky With the Sugar Free Allstars

DVD Review: "Gettin’ Funky With the Sugar Free Allstars”
Published: September 18, 2009

The Oklahoma City funk-rock duo of Chris Wiser and Rob "Dr. Rock” Martin releases its first children’s DVD with "Gettin’ Funky With the Sugar Free Allstars.”

The organ-drum combo delivers a bouncy live show that will get youngsters bopping and singing along. The Allstars’ music also will charm parents rather than making them suffer through the unwelcome overdose of sugary cuteness that comes with most children’s fare.

Filmed in August 2008 at City Arts Center, the concert DVD features the duo playing interactive songs from its 2007 children’s album "Dos Ninos,” including "Banana Pudding,” "He’s Okay (The Spider Song)” and the No. 1 XMKiDs satellite radio hit "Bathtub Boy.” The DVD also includes live performances of the previously unreleased songs "Tiger in My Backyard” and "The Train Beat Song.”

Local favorites at festivals and libraries, the Allstars know how to engage and entertain the preschool and grade-school sets. From tributes to grandparents to imaginings about make-believe animals, their songs are written specifically for children but incorporate infectious grooves and clever lyrics.

As with any concert DVD, "Gettin’ Funky” is no substitute for the experience of seeing the Allstars live. But it allows children to take the show home with them and enjoy the catchy songs again and again.

The DVD is available at the band’s shows or online at www.cdbaby.com. It includes a free audio download of the soundtrack.
