For those of you who have been keeping up with the Star Bock Beer vs. Starbucks case involving our own Wrecks Bell (proprietor of the Old Quarter in Galveston, TVZ and Lightnin' Hopkins bass player and charter MTM member)...this from our dear friend's lips: "Judge Samuel B. Kent was forced to retire from the bench and pleaded guilty to one count of obstruction of justice in federal court in Houston, averting a trial. For those of you who are not locals, this federal judge, Samuel Kent, is the scum bag who made the insane ruling that kept my Star Bock Beer off the national markets. We knew all along that Starbucks bought and paid for this clown. My attorney doesn't think this will reopen the cases. I do feel a little justice has been served. President Obama will pick his replacement." I guess what goes around truly does come around. Maybe Kent will rot with the thieves who stole Opie's stuff. A WORD ABOUT THE TEXAS MUSIC AWARDSTM | We'd like to say a word about the Texas Music AwardsTM. And the word is MUSIC. We are so proud of the way recipients of the Texas Music AwardsTM are determined. It truly is all about the music. With so many other award systems, popularity seems to be the key to receiving an award. That's why they call it 'winning' an award. The person with the most votes wins. The Texas Music AwardsTM are different. We don't believe that the teenager next door with a new computer and a clever-sounding MySpace handle should be rewarded for getting a few thousand people to visit a site and click a button. The Texas Music AwardsTM are a recognition process that rewards professionals in the music industry for work they have done in the previous year. This means that the decision must be made by those who know music the best. That's why we have three voting groups and each of them carry a specific weight.
The public vote is important. An artist must remain true to their fans and what their fans think of them says volumes about what kind of music they're creating. The public votes are tabulated and the results count 10% in the voting system. Public votes have determined many of the awards in the past, but it wouldn't be all about the music if these results were the only determining factor.
An artist's peers are important in their career. That's why all the members of the Academy of Texas Music, Inc. get a special ballot which counts as 20% of the total in the process. You can become a voting member of the Academy also. This means that you can vote on the public ballot and vote again on the Academy ballot making your voice just a little more audible. Voting membership is $40 per year and the dollars go to the Academy, which is a public charity. With all those musicians, industry professionals, and member fans voting, this still makes the process all about the music.
Those who have blazed trails before us are usually the ones to help us find the path. That's why 70% of the votes in the process are cast by former recipients of the Texas Music AwardsTM. Each year, that group grows, as the new recipients are added to the Academy Board of Honorees. They know music, and they know what it takes to walk across that stage and get an award. They take hours pouring over music and information to make their decisions in each category. They rank each nominee rather than just selecting their choice. This AP style of voting is the fairest we could find, and it makes for some close calls, but it's exciting and it insures that these awards are all about one thing... the music. And because of that, you will NEVER see or hear us use the word "winner", because that would denote that there were "losers", and we know there are NONE of those in this process! Therefore, we prefer "award recipient"!
There are two things we want you to remember about the Texas Music AwardsTM:
1. Recognition, not competition.
2. It's about the music.... it's about time.
Please take a few minutes to visit the Texas Music AwardsTM website - there's so much to see!

THE ACADEMY MISSION STATEMENT | The Academy promotes worldwide recognition and perpetuation of Texas Music and the musicians of the State of Texas, whether they are Texans by birth, residence, or philosophy.
The Academy creates, provides, and enhances music education through various avenues such as clinics, public and private school education programs, and direct scholarships. The Academy provides benevolence to qualifying musicians and their families in times of hardship. The Academy provides formal recognition for musicians and professionals in the Texas music industry through the presentation of an annual awards ceremony. The Academy offers oversight as the sanctioning body for all musical awards processes in Texas, ensuring fair practices and promoting professional equity. | | | | |
|
GET TO KNOW THE ACADEMY | "Thank heaven for the Academy of Texas Music - it is more important to me than the CMA, of which I am a member - thank you!" - Corene S. (Texas) The Academy of Texas Music, Inc. is a 501(c)3 public charity organized for the above mission. It is the brainchild of Jinelle and Lucky Boyd who, in 2007, turned the reigns over to a newly created board of directors. Currently, the board consists of four members, with an additional three members to be seated at the next board meeting.
There is so much work to be done. Education, scholarships, and assistance to musicians in need are the focus of the Academy. Recognition of musicians through the Texas Music Awards is the annual fundraiser. One day, we hope that fundraiser is enough to fund the mission. Right now, it's not. Your donations can help. Please visit the Academy site atwww.academyoftexasmusic.org and find out how you can help.
If you know of foundations willing to fund our mission, please let us know so we can begin their application process. We are in need of funds for education projects, and there's so much work to be done. If you would like to donate to the Academy, you may: email us at info@academyoftexasmusic.org or visit www.donatetexas.org or Mail your donation to: Academy of Texas Music, Inc. P.O. Box 172 Atlanta, TX 75551
You may notice the Texas Triangle logo associated with the Academy. This represents the three entities that work hard toward promoting Texas music and the artists who create it. Those entities are the non-profit Academy, the Texas Music Awards, and MyTexasMusic.com, the retail partner.
Your support is appreciated. We want you to know that the Academy oversees the entire awards process, insuring that everything is fair, equitable, and professional. We're proud of all the board members who have donated their time and talents to this necessary endeavor.
Together, we can change the world through music, but first we must be diligent in making Texas the hub of all wonderfully musical things.
