As the crow flies, This Week in Film & Music presents a straightforward weekend that is entertaining to the core. The 9th Annual deadCENTER Film Festival hits the nail on the head when it comes to creating a memorable experience for filmmakers and film fans alike.Bartlesville becomes the bull's-eye for classical music lovers at the 25th Annual OKMOZART Festival. Aimed toward raising funds and awareness for Norman's Transition House, June Bug Jam 2009 will feature auctions and live musical performances. These activities should leave you feeling very centered.

9th Annual deadCENTER Film Festival
Screening over 90 films in seven venues, the 9th Annual deadCENTER Film Festivalofficially kicked off on Wednesday with an outdoor screening in downtown Oklahoma City. Named for Oklahoma's geographic location, deadCENTER was founded over nine years ago to promote independent film arts through screenings, focused programming, special events, competition, and panel discussions. Several films made in Oklahoma or by Oklahomans will be featured as part of this year's festival, as will national features, award-winning documentaries, and several short film programs over the weekend. Objectified
By exploring the world of industrial design, Objectified centers on the people who re-examine, re-evaluate, and re-invent our manufactured environment on a daily basis. With recurring themes of personal expression, identity, consumerism, and sustainability, the feature-length documentary uncovers the truth regarding our relationship to mass-produced objects and the people who design them. Presented in partnership with SR Hughes and Circle Cinema, this Philbrook Museum premiere will feature a discussion with director Gary Hustwit after the screening.

Viva Voce w/Cut off Your Hands
Named for the Italian phrase for "by word of mouth," Portland indie-rock group Viva Vocewas formed in 1998 by Kevin and Anita Robinson and expanded in 2008 to officially include Corrina Repp and Evan Railton. 2009's Rose City, their first album as a quartet, was written, arranged and recorded all in one month and the result is a subtle yet intricately guitar-driven project. Power indie-pop group Cut off Your Hands will appear as special guests.

The Souvenirs
All hailing from Tulsa, the members of The Souvenirs include frontman Chris Lee Becker,Mike Hopper II on lead acoustic guitar, Daniel Redmond on bass, and Jay Lesikar on keyboard. The four musicians emanate sounds reminiscent of bluegrass, country, Americana, and rock on tracks like "Tattoos of Venus," "What's Behind You," and "Grampa," which can be found on the band's MySpace.

Tulpan
A gorgeous mélange of tender comedy, ethnographic drama and wildlife extravaganza,Tulpan is the first narrative feature from acclaimed documentarian Sergey Dvortsevoy. When discharged sailor Asa returns home to the Kazakh Hunger Steppe, his only goals are to get married and have his own flock of sheep. However, his advances toward the area's only eligible bachelorette are rejected, and Asa will stop at nothing to prove he is a worthy husband. This 2008 Cannes Film Festival Prix Un Certain Regard winner will be presented in Kazakh with English subtitles.

Summer Bash 2009
Oklahoma City rock sextet For the Atlantic recently finished recording their debut EP, The High Life. Due out this summer, the project will include high energy punk-rock tracks such as "Keep Shouting," "Leave It At That," and "That's All She Wrote." In celebration of the grand opening of Velvet Monkey Salon, LIVE on the Plaza Second Fridays presents an evening of funky style and rockabilly music. Based on Sidney Lumet's 1957 12 Angry Men, acclaimed director Nikita Mikhalkov's Oscar-nominated 12 is an enthralling dissection of the many personal and social quandaries facing modern-day Russia. The film follows the deliberations of an all-male jury as they decide the fate of a Chechen teenager accused of murdering his adoptive Russian father. As one juror slowly begins to convince the group of the boy's innocence, the foreman reveals that an acquittal could result in the boy's murder by the real criminals and the jury must decide if the right verdict is in itself a death sentence. The film is presented in Russian and Chechen with English subtitles.

Wanda Jackson
Now considered an American icon, Wanda Jackson was only halfway through high school in 1954 when country singer Hank Thompson heard her on an Oklahoma City radio show and asked her to record with his band. By the end of the decade, Jackson had become one of America's first female country and rockabilly singers. Recently inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, the living legend is still known as the Queen of Rock.

Now in its thirteenth year, June Bug Jam 2009 is a talent showcase created to benefit Norman's Transition House, a non-profit organization that assists adults recovering from mental illness as they are transitioning from in-patient treatment to community living. Featuring emcee Paul Austin, the celebration will include musical performances by Joan Colee, Katherine Lock, David Wilson-Burns, Tina Anderson, Morgan Brown, Suite 4and more, in addition to both silent and live auctions.
