Downtown Stillwater has teamed up with Louie’s Grill and Bar to bring a summer concert series, Downtown After Dark, to the streets of downtown Stillwater.

Tulsa blues artist Steve Pryor will perform on the first night, which is Thursday.

“It’s just a great way to spend the evening,” Business Improvement District Coordinator Angela McLaughlin said. “(We’re) hoping to add a little night life downtown.”

Louie’s general manager Clayton Robertson brought up the idea with McLaughlin, who said she would be able to help.

“They thought it would be a great idea,” Robertson said. “It’s all been very smooth. The city’s been great working with me about it.”

The free event, which will also take place July 30 and Sept. 3, will focus on blues, jazz and a little bit of rock, McLaughlin said.

“We just wanted to offer something a little bit different,” she said. “Hopefully, it is well received and if it is, we’ll do more.”

Robertson said he hopes to see a solid base of attendees Thursday night.

“This first go around, I would be happy with three (hundred) to 400 people showing up,” he said. “And I think those people will have a heck of a show to see.”

He said the event would be good for families, college students and single adults. Louie’s has a permit to have a beer cage on Eighth Avenue, he said.

“No. 1, hopefully, it’s a night that will bring students back from Tulsa and bring them back to the downtown,” he said. “And No. 2, just to really give the locals a new venue to come out and watch.”

McLaughlin said the event, which will close a small portion of Eighth Avenue, is good to highlight the opportunities in the evening in the downtown area.

“A few years ago, after 5 (p.m.) downtown, it was like a ghost town,” she said. “We’re really trying to show people there are some things to do downtown after dark.”
